But an export is a readable file, not a restorable WhatsApp backup: WhatsApp says it cannot be imported back into the app. If you need to restore chat history inside WhatsApp, use the account-level backup for Android or iPhone; the official instructions describe restoring the latest successful backup, not backing up or restoring just one selected chat.

How to export one WhatsApp chat
On Android
- Open the individual or group chat you want to save.
- Tap More options > More > Export chat.
- Choose Without media or Include media.
- Choose a sharing or saving method, such as email, a message, or notes, and complete the on-screen steps. Exact choices depend on the apps available on your phone. WhatsApp Help Center: Export chat
On iPhone
- Open the individual or group chat.
- Tap the contact or group name to open chat details, then choose Export Chat.
- Choose whether to attach media, then select a sharing or saving method.
WhatsApp’s iOS export instructions surfaced in French describe the exported file as a ZIP archive and say view-once messages are not exported. Menu wording can differ by app version and language, so if labels differ, look for the export option in the chat’s details. An export cannot be imported into WhatsApp as a backup. What happens to the exported chat?
The export gives you a copy outside WhatsApp for reading, keeping, or sharing. It does not create a restore point for the app. As WhatsApp’s Help Center puts it, “Your chat history can’t be re-imported because it’s a text file and not a backup file.” That distinction matters if you are deleting WhatsApp, changing phones, or trying to recover messages later.
How to make a restorable WhatsApp backup
Android: back up through your Google Account
WhatsApp’s Android instructions use a Google Account for cloud chat-history backups. To run one manually, open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup, review the account and backup options, then start the backup. The setup also lets you choose a backup schedule and whether to include videos. Restoration uses the latest successful backup available on the Android device; the instructions do not offer a way to select just one chat for restoration. iPhone: back up through iCloud
WhatsApp’s iPhone instructions describe automatic and manual chat-history backups through iCloud. Open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup to review the backup status or start one manually. To restore, use the same phone number and iCloud account associated with the backup; WhatsApp says chats and media can be restored only from the latest successful backup made on that iPhone. Android backups can replace earlier backups
WhatsApp says Android Google Account backups are tied to both the phone number and Google Account used to create them. It also warns that a new backup using the same Google Account overwrites the previous one, and that Google may automatically delete WhatsApp backups that have not been updated for five months. Advanced Chat Privacy may disable export
If you cannot export a particular conversation, check whether Advanced Chat Privacy is enabled for that chat. WhatsApp says participants in a chat with this setting enabled cannot export it. The supported option is to follow the chat’s privacy settings, not to try to bypass them. WhatsApp Help Center: Advanced Chat Privacy
iPhone storage and encrypted-backup access
WhatsApp’s iPhone guidance says available iCloud and iPhone storage should be at least 2.05 times the backup size. If you use an end-to-end encrypted backup, keep its password or key: WhatsApp says you need it to access that backup. WhatsApp Help Center: Back up to iCloud

Which option should you use?
- To keep or share one conversation outside the app: export that chat and choose whether to include media.
- To recover chat history inside WhatsApp: use the Android Google Account or iPhone iCloud backup workflow, and check that the latest successful backup is current before relying on it.
- To move history between phones: use WhatsApp’s supported chat-transfer workflow for your platform; do not treat it as a selected-chat backup.
