Check a Configuration Manager (SCCM) management point at three levels: inspect its role status in the console, review the site server’s MpControl.log for recurring availability checks, then examine an affected client’s LocationServices.log and CcmMessaging.log. Together, these checks help distinguish a role-level availability issue from a problem limited to a client or its communication path.
1. Check management point status in the Configuration Manager console
Start with the console for the broad site and site-system view. Microsoft’s deployment example directs administrators to verify management point status in the console: Microsoft’s Configuration Manager site installation example.
For client-level context, open Monitoring > Client Status. To review the dashboard, open Monitoring > Client Status > Client Health Dashboard. You can filter the dashboard and drill down to device lists; use the selected collection and deployed Configuration Manager version when interpreting the results. Microsoft documents dashboard improvements in version 2111 and says the default dashboard view shows online clients active in the past three days: Microsoft Learn: Client health dashboard.
The dashboard is not a management-point-only test. Its overall client health combines online state, active reporting, and successful client health evaluation checks. A low or stale dashboard figure alone does not establish that the MP is down.

2. Check the MP’s availability probe in MpControl.log
On the site system server hosting the management point, open MpControl.log from the Configuration Manager logs directory. Microsoft’s log reference says it records MP registration and availability checks every ten minutes: Microsoft Learn: Configuration Manager log files.
A successful entry in Microsoft’s deployment example reads: Call to HttpSendRequestSync succeeded for port 443 with status code 200, text: OK. Treat port 443 as that example’s configured port, not a universal requirement. Check the actual communication mode and port used in your environment. See the same Microsoft deployment example.

A successful probe shows that the endpoint answered that check. It does not prove that every client can discover or communicate with the MP. If entries fail or repeat errors, use their timestamps and details to guide further investigation of the endpoint and its configuration; the log result by itself does not identify a root cause.
3. Check discovery and communication on an affected client
On a representative device that is having trouble, inspect these client logs, whose roles are defined in Microsoft’s Configuration Manager log reference:

LocationServices.log: shows the client locating management points.CcmMessaging.log: shows communication between the client and management points.
Compare the client entries with the MP’s MpControl.log at the relevant times. If the MP-side probe succeeds while the affected client reports discovery or messaging problems, focus next on that client’s selected MP, network path, or communication configuration. These logs narrow the scope of the issue; they do not necessarily reveal its cause on their own.
What Configuration Manager health statuses mean
Configuration Manager reports several different client signals. They describe different things and should not be treated as synonyms. Microsoft’s definitions are in Microsoft Learn: Monitor clients.

- Online: the client is connected to its assigned management point through the notification channel. If the MP receives no notification-channel message for five minutes, the site considers the client offline.
- Active: the client communicated with Configuration Manager in the past seven days through a policy update request, heartbeat message, or hardware inventory.
- Client check: the status of periodic client health evaluation. These checks can identify and remediate some client problems.
- Overall dashboard health: the client is online, actively sending data, and passing all client health evaluation checks.
Because those signals differ, a successful MP probe cannot establish that every client is healthy. Conversely, a client marked inactive or a dashboard count that looks stale is not, by itself, evidence that the MP is unavailable.
