To open links in Chrome by default, set Chrome as your device’s default browser. If a link still opens in a page inside the Google app, that is a separate in-app browsing behavior; changing the device default may not affect it.
Set Chrome as your default browser
Choose the instructions for your device. Menu names can vary slightly by operating-system version.
Android
- Open Settings on your device.
- Tap Apps, then Default apps or Choose default apps.
- Tap Browser app and select Chrome.
You can also try Chrome’s route: open Chrome, tap More, then choose Make Chrome default. Depending on the version, the setting may be under More > Settings > Default browser. Google’s Android instructions and Chrome Help describe these options.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for and select Google Chrome.
- Choose Set default. Review the associated file and link types if you want to confirm which ones use Chrome.

Windows 10
- Open Settings and go to Default apps.
- Select the current Web browser.
- Choose Google Chrome.
Windows’ default-app settings determine which browser opens supported links from other apps. See Chrome Help for Google’s instructions.
Mac and Linux
- Open Chrome and select More > Settings.
- Under Default browser, choose Make default.
If Chrome does not show that button, Google says Chrome is already the default browser. See Chrome Help.

iPhone and iPad
- In Chrome, open More > Settings > Default Browser.
- Tap Go to Settings, then choose Chrome as the default browser app.
Google says this option requires iOS 14 or later. If it is missing, update Chrome. See Chrome Help.

A default browser controls links that an app hands off to the operating system. An app can instead show a web page within its own interface, so setting Chrome as the default does not necessarily change that behavior.

A Google Chrome Community discussion dated October 15, 2025 describes this issue on a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. A volunteer Product Expert suggested looking in the Google app under Settings > General for Open web pages in the app, and checking the source app’s supported-link preferences in Android settings. This is community advice, not confirmed current guidance from Google; the labels and availability may vary by app version and device. If you do not see the suggested option, do not assume you have missed a system-wide Chrome setting. View the community discussion.

How to tell which setting you need
- If links from several apps open in the wrong browser, start with your device’s default-browser setting.
- If only one app shows pages inside its own screen, check that app’s settings; its in-app display behavior may be independent of the default browser.
- If a menu path does not match your device, look for the equivalent default-app or browser setting in the current version of its system settings.
