In Windows Media Player Legacy, add a music folder from Organize > Manage libraries > Music, then choose Add and Include folder. These steps are for the classic player; Windows 11 also has a newer Media Player app, and this menu path is not confirmed for that app.
Identify which Media Player you opened
Windows 11 includes the newer Media Player app as well as Windows Media Player Legacy. The instructions below apply to the legacy player, whose Library view has an Organize menu. The available Microsoft instructions document that classic interface, not a folder-add workflow for the newer app. If your screen does not show the legacy menus, do not assume the same path or labels apply.
Add a folder in Windows Media Player Legacy
- Open Windows Media Player Legacy. If it opens in Now Playing mode, switch to the Player Library.
- Select Organize > Manage libraries > Music.
- In the Music Library Locations dialog, select Add.
- Browse to the existing folder containing your music and select it.
- Choose Include folder, then confirm with OK.
- Give the library time to update, then check the Music library for the tracks.

What adding a folder does—and does not do
A Windows library is a collection of folder locations, not a command to move files. Adding a location makes its contents available through the library while the music stays in its original folder. Removing a location from a library likewise does not delete the folder or its files. Microsoft explains this library behavior in its Windows libraries overview.

If the music does not appear or play
Check the file type and codec
A folder can be included successfully while an individual track remains unavailable because of its format or a missing codec. Microsoft’s Windows Media Player 12 format list includes MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, M4A, and FLAC; additional formats may work when the required codecs are installed. Check Windows N edition media features
Windows 10 and Windows 11 N editions omit Windows Media Player and related media features by default. Microsoft documents the optional Media Feature Pack for restoring media functionality: Media Feature Pack for Windows N.

Distinguish File Explorer libraries from the player’s music library
To show libraries in File Explorer’s navigation pane, use View > Navigation pane > Show libraries. This only changes File Explorer’s navigation display; it is not the step that adds a folder to Windows Media Player. See Microsoft’s File Explorer guide.
