The most reliable way to add a second number to an Android phone is to activate a second carrier line with a physical SIM or eSIM, provided both your phone and carrier support it. After activation, choose which line to use for calls, texts, and mobile data. The steps and available choices vary by phone model, Android version, carrier, and country.
Choose how you want to add the number
A second carrier number requires a second carrier subscription and successful activation; adding a label in Settings does not create a phone line. Compare the available routes before signing up:

For a physical-SIM setup, a prepaid SIM starter kit may provide the SIM, but do not assume the kit itself includes a working number or service. Check the carrier’s compatibility and plan terms before purchasing. An eSIM may avoid the need to buy a physical SIM.
Check phone and carrier compatibility
Before ordering a plan or SIM, ask the carrier to confirm support for your exact phone model, regional version, and desired activation method. Dual-SIM capability is not universal, and a phone that accepts an eSIM does not necessarily support two active eSIMs.

Google says Pixel 3a and later can use one physical SIM and one eSIM. Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and later may support two eSIM profiles when the carrier allows it; regional models can differ. See Google’s Pixel dual-SIM instructions.
Android 13 or later can support dual SIM through a single eSIM chip using Multiple Enabled Profiles (MEP), but the phone maker and chipset vendor must integrate that feature. The Android version alone does not establish that a particular phone can keep two eSIM profiles active. The Android Open Source Project’s MEP documentation, last updated July 13, 2026, explains the implementation requirement.

Set up a second line on a Google Pixel
Google documents the following Pixel workflow. Menu labels and behavior can differ on other Android phones. Some Pixel instructions require Android 11 or later.
- Confirm support: Ask your carrier whether your exact Pixel and plan support dual SIM and the physical-SIM or eSIM setup you want.
- Add an eSIM to a phone already using a SIM: Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Set up an eSIM. Choose the eSIM provider and follow the activation prompts.
- Add a physical SIM to a phone already using eSIM: Insert the SIM and follow the setup prompts on the phone.
- Choose line preferences: After activation, open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. Set preferences for calls, texts, and mobile data.
For Pixel, you can choose “Ask every time” for calls. Only one SIM can be the default for mobile data. Google’s Pixel dual-SIM help page has the device-specific details.

Choose which number handles calls, texts, and data
Once the second line is active, review the SIM preferences rather than assuming the new number is automatically used for everything. Select the preferred line for calls and texts, and select one line for mobile data. If you choose a line manually for a call or message, check the displayed line before sending or placing it.

If setup does not work
- The Add SIM or eSIM option is missing: Confirm the exact model and regional variant support the desired SIM arrangement. Contact the carrier to check device compatibility and activation availability.
- The carrier cannot activate the line: Verify the plan is eligible, the carrier supports your device and country, and the activation steps have been completed as directed by the carrier.
- You want two active eSIMs: Check both the phone’s implementation and carrier support. Android 13 or later alone is not enough to confirm this capability.
- You cannot select two lines for mobile data: Pixel allows only one default mobile-data SIM at a time. Choose the line you want to use for data in SIM preferences.
