For the right Realtek audio driver, go to the official support page for your exact PC or motherboard model, then select the package for your Windows version. Realtek’s general downloads may not include manufacturer-specific audio features. If you need Windows to reinstall an audio driver, uninstall the audio device in Device Manager and restart your PC.
Before downloading: identify your PC or motherboard
“Realtek HD Audio Manager” is often used to mean the settings interface associated with a Realtek audio driver. The manager interface and available features can vary by computer, so a generic driver download does not guarantee that a particular panel will appear.
- Find your computer’s exact model. For a custom-built desktop, identify the motherboard model.
- Open that model’s official support or downloads page from the PC or motherboard maker.
- Choose your installed Windows version and locate the audio driver. Check that the listed model and supported Windows version match your system.
- Download the driver and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. There is no single installation sequence that applies to every maker or package.
Realtek says its website’s audio drivers are general drivers for its audio chips and may omit customizations made by a system or motherboard manufacturer. For the full features of the original audio product, Realtek recommends downloading the latest driver from that manufacturer’s website: Realtek PC Audio Codecs: High Definition Audio Codecs Software.
Reinstall the audio driver through Device Manager
Use this Windows route when you want to remove and reinstall the audio device driver. Save open work first because your PC will restart.

- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the Realtek audio device and select Uninstall device. If Windows displays a checkbox to remove the driver software, do not select it unless you intend to remove that package as well.
- Restart the PC. Microsoft says the restart should prompt Windows to reinstall the audio driver.
If Windows does not find a suitable driver, download the audio driver from the PC or motherboard maker’s support page and follow its instructions. Microsoft’s steps are in Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.
If sound stopped working after a Windows update
If the audio problem began after an update, Microsoft recommends considering a driver rollback. In Device Manager, open the audio device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if that option is available. Follow the prompts and restart if Windows requests it. Why not install the first Realtek download you find?
Realtek’s official PC Audio Codecs page lists R2.83 packages for Windows Vista through Windows 10; its 64-bit ZIP entry is marked as updated August 15, 2024. That dated listing does not establish that R2.83 is suitable for every computer or for Windows 11. Choose a package based on your exact hardware and Windows version, preferably from the device maker.
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If you still use Windows 10, take that support status into account when choosing what to install and when troubleshooting.

Quick checks if the manager interface is still missing
- Confirm that the driver is for your exact PC or motherboard model and Windows version.
- Check the maker’s support page for any separate instructions or audio software associated with the driver.
- Do not assume a generic driver will restore the same manager interface or manufacturer-specific features as the original installation.
- If the driver installs but the sound problem remains, use Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting guidance or the device maker’s support resources.
