The fix depends on which Outlook app you use. In new Outlook for Windows, PDF attachments should open in Edge when Edge is the Windows default browser; choose a different default PDF app if you want to use another viewer. In classic Outlook, check the previewer setting. If you see “This file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed for it,” Microsoft also documents two specific causes: mismatched Outlook and Adobe Acrobat Reader bitness, or PowerToys overriding PDF preview.
First, identify your Outlook app
Microsoft provides different guidance for new Outlook and classic Outlook for Windows. The Trust Center steps below apply to classic Outlook, not new Outlook. For current attachment troubleshooting, see Microsoft’s Outlook for Windows attachment guide.
In new Outlook, check the Windows default PDF app
Microsoft says, “If you use Microsoft Edge as your default browser, PDF attachments should open in Edge.” If you prefer Acrobat Reader or another installed viewer, change the Windows default app for PDF files. This is the new Outlook opening behavior; it is separate from the classic Outlook “no previewer installed” error.
In classic Outlook, address the specific “no previewer installed” error
Microsoft’s article for this exact error identifies two possible causes. The guidance applies to the named error, not every situation where Outlook fails to display a PDF. Its article was last updated March 18, 2022, so menus may have changed; check current labels in your installed apps.

Match Adobe Reader and Outlook bitness
- Check whether Outlook and Adobe Acrobat Reader are 32-bit or 64-bit in each app’s About screen.
- If their bitness differs, install the Reader version with the same bitness as Outlook.
Microsoft documents this workaround in its classic Outlook PDF preview error article. It is not a general requirement to reinstall Reader whenever a PDF preview fails.
Check PowerToys’ PDF preview setting
If PowerToys is installed, open its File Explorer add-ons settings and turn off Enable PDF (.pdf) preview. Microsoft identifies this setting as a possible override that can cause the named error.

Check classic Outlook’s attachment preview settings
- In classic Outlook, select File > Options > Trust Center.
- Select Trust Center Settings > Attachment Handling.
- Under Attachment and Document Previewers, check whether the PDF previewer is enabled. Outlook can disable all attachment previewers or let you clear the setting for an individual previewer.
Microsoft’s general attachment guidance explains these controls. It does not identify a disabled previewer as one of the two causes in the targeted “no previewer installed” article. Preview support can also depend on the file, app, and configuration. Attachments embedded in a message body cannot be previewed there; they need to be opened.

If Outlook still cannot preview the file, save or download the attachment and open it with an installed PDF viewer, such as Edge or Adobe Reader. This is a fallback, not a reason to bypass Outlook’s attachment protections. Only open attachments when you trust the sender and the content. Microsoft notes that potentially unsafe file types are blocked and that active content such as scripts, macros, and ActiveX controls is disabled during preview.
