Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes—at the time, updating to iOS 17.4.1 was Apple’s recommended choice. Apple released it on March 21, 2024, and said it contained important bug fixes and security updates. iOS 17.5 later arrived on May 13, 2024, so the “before release” recommendation is now historical, not a current update alert.
What did iOS 17.4.1 fix?
Apple’s iOS 17 update history says: “This update provides important bug fixes and security updates and is recommended for all users.” Apple’s security notes date iOS 17.4.1 to March 21, 2024, and document CVE-2024-1580 for CoreMedia and WebRTC.

For both components, Apple describes the impact as processing an image potentially leading to arbitrary code execution. The stated fix was improved input validation to address an out-of-bounds write. Apple lists iPhone XS and later among the affected devices, as well as specified iPad models. The duplicate CoreMedia and WebRTC entries are how Apple presents the issue; they should not be read as evidence of two separate vulnerabilities or broader exploit activity. Details are in Apple’s iOS 17.4.1 and iPadOS 17.4.1 security-content notes.
When did iOS 17.5 come out, and what changed?
Apple released iOS 17.5 on May 13, 2024. Its update history lists feature changes including Apple News+ offline mode, the Quartiles game in Apple News+, scoreboard information for News+ puzzles, and cross-platform tracking notifications.

Version 17.5 also included security fixes, so it was not only a feature release. Apple’s security document, for example, lists CVE-2024-27826 for Apple Neural Engine: a local attacker could cause an unexpected system shutdown, and Apple addressed it with improved memory handling. The document also lists CVE-2024-27804 for AppleAVD and CVE-2024-27816 for AppleMobileFileIntegrity; these are examples, not an exhaustive account of the fixes. See Apple’s iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 security-content notes.

What should you do now?
The recommendation to install 17.4.1 applied before 17.5 was released. Since Apple released 17.5 on May 13, 2024, that timing has passed. These release notes establish what Apple said about those two versions; they do not establish which iOS version Apple offers today. Check your iPhone’s available update in Settings rather than treating 17.4.1 or 17.5 as a current recommendation.
