Discord lets people communicate through text, voice, and video in direct conversations or shared community spaces called servers. Inside a server, channels separate discussions and activities; members can also join live voice conversations and share their screen or gameplay. You can join a server with an invite and adjust privacy and safety controls in your account settings.
How Discord is organized
Think of a server as a shared group space and its channels as separate rooms for different conversations or activities. This is a useful analogy for understanding the app, not a description of Discord’s technical infrastructure.
Servers
A server is a customizable space for friends or a community. It may be private and invite-only, or configured for a broader community. Server owners can organize channels and manage who can access particular spaces and features. Discord’s server setup guide explains the available setup and management tools.
Channels
Text channels hold written discussions and files, while voice channels let members connect and talk live. Community servers may also have forum channels, which organize topic-based posts. Permissions can determine which members use specific channels or features. See Discord’s channel guidance.

Direct messages
Direct messages (DMs) and group DMs let you talk outside a server. Discord also supports voice and screen sharing in direct and group conversations. Its beginner’s guide covers the main ways to communicate.
How to join Discord and start communicating
You can create an account using Discord’s desktop app, mobile device, or browser. To enter a community, you generally need a server invite. Discord’s joining guide describes the process and notes that some privacy choices can be set before accepting an invite.

- Create or sign in to your account. Use Discord on desktop, mobile, or in a browser.
- Open a server invite. Review the invite and any privacy choices shown before joining, such as whether to allow direct messages from server members or display your activity status.
- Choose a channel or conversation. Use a text channel for written discussion, a voice channel for live conversation, or a DM to talk privately with someone.
- Connect by voice or video when needed. You can talk or use video in supported calls and share your screen or gameplay from a voice channel, DM, or group DM. The available options depend on the conversation context and current client features.
A voice channel is a live, drop-in space rather than a conventional phone call: members connect to talk while they are in the channel. Discord’s beginner’s guide and screen-sharing and video-call guide describe these communication options.
Privacy and safety controls to know
Discord offers configurable controls for direct-message spam and sensitive media, as well as an explicit-image filter for server owners. The available settings and their defaults can change, so check Discord’s current safety setup guidance rather than assuming a particular filter is enabled.

Discord documents end-to-end encryption for audio and video calls. Its call privacy view provides codes that participants can compare through a separate channel to check that they see the same call. However, supported clients and feature limits matter: Discord’s guidance says stream previews are not end-to-end encrypted. Check the current encryption documentation for the devices and call features it covers before relying on a specific setup; support details can change.
