To mount an existing LVM logical volume in Linux, make sure it is active, create a mount-point directory, then mount its device path: sudo mount /dev/<VG>/<LV> /mnt/<mountpoint>. Replace the placeholders with your volume group, logical volume, and directory names. A regular partition uses its actual partition device path instead, such as /dev/sdXN. Mounting attaches an existing filesystem; it does not create one.
Mount an LVM logical volume

Find the logical volume and its device path:
sudo lvs -o lv_name,vg_name,lv_pathUse the actual path shown; do not guess the volume-group or logical-volume name. The standard active-LV path is
/dev/<VG>/<LV>. The/dev/mappernaming form is intended for internal use and may vary. See Red Hat’s logical-volume documentation and the LVM manual. -
If the intended LV is inactive, activate it:
sudo lvchange -ay <VG>/<LV>To activate all logical volumes in that volume group instead, run
sudo vgchange -ay <VG>. Replace<VG>with the actual volume group. -
Create a mount point and mount the LV:
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/<mountpoint> sudo mount /dev/<VG>/<LV> /mnt/<mountpoint>For example, if the volume group is

Check that the mount succeeded:
findmnt -o SOURCE,TARGETLook for the LV as the source and your chosen directory as the target.
Mount a regular partition
For a non-LVM partition, pass its actual partition device path to mount and specify a directory that exists or create one first:

sudo mkdir -p /mnt/<mountpoint>
sudo mount /dev/<partition-device> /mnt/<mountpoint>/dev/sdXN is only a pattern, not a device name to copy. Identify the correct partition on your system. A physical volume (PV) that contributes storage to an LV is not automatically the filesystem source: when mounting an LV filesystem, use the LV path, not the underlying PV device. The mount manual describes the source device and target directory roles.

Either source must contain a filesystem that the host can mount. Filesystem type and mount options depend on the filesystem and system requirements; they are not determined merely by whether the source is an LV or a partition.

Specify a filesystem type only when needed
Linux supports different filesystem types, including ext4 and XFS. If automatic detection is unsuitable or you need to specify the type, use -t with the actual filesystem type:
sudo mount -t <type> <device> /mnt/<mountpoint>For example, replace <type> with the filesystem actually present, and <device> with the LV or partition path. Do not assume every volume uses the same filesystem or options. Consult the relevant mount documentation for available options.

Make the mount persistent across reboots
A command-line mount normally attaches the filesystem for the current system session. To have it mounted during future boots, add an entry to /etc/fstab. Using the filesystem UUID avoids depending on a device name that could change with hardware detection order. The entry has six fields: source, mount point, filesystem type, options, dump frequency, and filesystem-check pass number.
UUID=<filesystem-uuid> /mnt/<mountpoint> <fstype> defaults 0 2This is an example shape, not a universal prescription. Replace the placeholders with the filesystem’s UUID, your mount point, and its real filesystem type; choose options and the final field values for your system. After editing /etc/fstab, test the entries with:

sudo mount -aOn a systemd-based system, reload systemd’s view of the configuration after editing the file:
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadSee the fstab manual for field details and the systemd note.
Do not format the volume as part of mounting
Do not run mkfs to mount an existing volume. mkfs creates a filesystem by writing to a device; it is a separate operation and can destroy existing data. Mount the LV or partition that already contains the filesystem. If a mount fails or the volume’s state is unclear, do not guess at a filesystem type or attempt repair commands: the correct diagnosis depends on the host and storage setup.
