Input masking formats or constrains a value while someone types it. It works best when a field has a common, predictable format—such as a ZIP code or Social Security number—not when the value is free-form or complicated. A mask is an entry aid, not proof that the value is valid or that sensitive data is protected.
What input masking means
In a form, an input mask guides entry into a pattern. It may show punctuation such as parentheses or dashes as the user types, while reserving character positions for the value itself. In the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) example, those visible punctuation literals are omitted from the submitted value.
The term is also used for other, distinct techniques. Privacy masking or redaction obscures sensitive information in places such as logs, datasets, APIs, or session recordings. CSS masking changes how an element or border is visually painted. Neither is the same as a form control that shapes typed input.
When a form mask helps—and when it does not
Use a mask for a predictable format
USWDS recommends considering a mask when a field has a specific expected format, with ZIP codes and Social Security numbers as examples. Its guidance says a mask can shape entry without impairing copying, pasting, or correcting a mistyped value. The key is that users can understand the format and recover from mistakes.

Skip masks for free-form or complicated values
Email addresses are a poor fit for a fixed entry pattern. Let the user enter the address, then use a validation library to check it before submission. Apply the same principle to other values whose valid forms are too varied for a useful mask.
A mask does not make an entered value valid simply because it fits the visible pattern. Validate the value against the requirements of the application, and provide clear feedback when it fails.

Design the field so users can enter and correct a value
- Associate a label with the control. Do not rely on a placeholder as the field’s only label.
- Add a useful hint. Explain what to enter and, where it helps, what the expected format is.
- Choose an appropriate input mode. USWDS uses
inputmode="numeric"in its numeric example. For alphanumeric masks, it recommends text input mode so users have access to the full keyboard. - Make the pattern and displayed mask agree. If punctuation appears as a literal, ensure the validation pattern and submitted value handle it consistently.
- Support correction and paste. Test editing in the middle of a value, deleting characters, selecting and replacing text, and pasting a complete value—not just typing from left to right.
- Give feedback at the right time. USWDS advises waiting until the user has interacted with the field before showing error styling or a message. Explain the error and how to fix it.
In the USWDS example, a placeholder illustrates expected characters, a regular-expression pattern describes the intended format, and underscores stand for user-entered characters. These are implementation choices, not a universal recipe. Adapt them to the field and test the resulting control in context.

Input masks are available in different forms; they are not interchangeable. Compare them using the behaviors that matter to your project:

JavaScript libraries
The estelle/input-masking project describes a framework-agnostic JavaScript library that adds literal spaces, dashes, and parentheses. Its setup documentation calls for an associated label, an appropriate input type, and a descriptive title when using pattern. These are that project’s instructions; they should not be treated as universal browser requirements. The project’s current maintenance or release status is not established here.
The archived react-input-mask README highlights autofill considerations for fields such as phone numbers and ZIP codes, and says a two-factor security code should not depend on autofill. That is implementation-specific guidance. Test the actual browser, device, and framework combination you support.

Platform controls
For Windows Forms, Microsoft documents MaskedTextBox as a declarative control for accepting or rejecting input. Its behavior and configuration are specific to Windows Forms rather than a general web-form standard.

USWDS reports that its component was tested against nine WCAG 2.1 AA success criteria: six passed, two passed with exceptions, and one failed. That result applies to the tested USWDS component; it does not establish that every mask has the same result. USWDS also directs teams to test their own implementations.

Include assistive-technology and error-recovery checks in that testing. Verify that users can identify the field and its instructions, understand errors, and correct or replace a value without losing their place. A format that looks clear visually may still be confusing when announced or edited with another input method.
Input masking does not protect sensitive data
A form mask changes how information is entered. It does not by itself protect the value after entry, keep it out of logs, or conceal it in a session recording. Privacy controls address those separate risks:
- @pii-mask/core describes masking modes for strings and structured values.
- Salesforce’s data-mask guidance discusses selective masking in test-data workflows.
- Smartlook’s Privacy API documentation describes masking forms and inputs in session recordings.
These pages describe product capabilities; they do not independently prove that a specific setup meets a legal or regulatory requirement. Likewise, the @pii-mask/react documentation says its reveal option leaves authorization to the caller. Hiding a value in the display is not an access-control system.
CSS masking is a separate visual feature: MDN’s CSS masking documentation describes painting an object onto a background or border and masking part or all of the element or border. It does not define how users enter a form value.
