To request administrator access when a batch file starts, have it launch an elevated Command Prompt through PowerShell’s Start-Process -Verb RunAs. Windows controls the elevation: a UAC prompt may ask for approval or administrator credentials, and the script cannot grant itself rights. For a task that must run on a schedule or without an interactive prompt, configure Task Scheduler instead.

Request elevation when the batch file starts

For an interactive launch, the batch file can start a second, elevated cmd.exe process to run itself. Microsoft documents the RunAs verb for Start-Process, which requests elevation for the new process. Microsoft’s Start-Process reference

Place this bootstrap at the top of the batch file, before commands that need administrator rights:

@echo off
set "params=%*"
powershell -NoProfile -Command "Start-Process -FilePath '%ComSpec%' -ArgumentList '/c', '""%~f0"" %params%' -Verb RunAs"
exit /b

This is an illustrative pattern, not a universal argument-safe wrapper. It uses %~f0 to refer to the batch file’s full path and %* to forward the original arguments. Passing paths and arguments through batch, PowerShell, and cmd.exe involves several layers of quoting, so test the actual file path and arguments—including spaces and special characters—before relying on it. If practical, hard-code the target path or use a companion script to reduce escaping complexity.

#1 Best Overall

The original, unelevated batch process exits after starting the elevated process. The elevated window may close when the batch file finishes; if you need to inspect output, add an appropriate pause or logging behavior to the task itself.

What happens when Windows requests elevation

-Verb RunAs requests an elevated process; it does not bypass User Account Control (UAC). Depending on the account and UAC configuration, Windows may show a consent prompt or ask for administrator credentials. The user can approve or deny the request. Microsoft’s UAC overview

The account and system policy must permit elevated access. Microsoft’s guidance notes that an account needs to belong to the local Administrators group to have the ability to run with elevated rights. A standard user may need credentials for an administrator account, and organizational policy can affect what is allowed. Microsoft’s User Account Control and WMI guidance

Choose a launch method for how you use the batch file

Method Best fit Trade-off
PowerShell Start-Process -Verb RunAs You start the batch file and can respond to UAC. Creates a separate elevated process; quoting needs testing, and Windows may request consent or credentials. Microsoft
Run Command Prompt as administrator, then run the batch file Occasional manual use or troubleshooting. You must open the elevated prompt yourself. Microsoft
Task Scheduler with an appropriate security context and run level Recurring or scheduled work. You must configure the task’s account, trigger, and security context; execution depends on that configuration. Microsoft
Compiled launcher with a UAC manifest A packaged executable needs to declare its requested execution level. The manifest belongs to the executable launcher, not the plain .bat file; request only the level the operation needs. Microsoft

Use Task Scheduler for repeatable or scheduled runs

If the batch file needs to run regularly, Task Scheduler lets you configure a task’s account, trigger, and security context rather than relying on a person to respond to a UAC prompt at each launch. Review the task’s run level and account carefully: a task’s behavior depends on those settings. Microsoft’s task security-context documentation

Request only the privileges the commands need

Administrator access is appropriate only for operations that require it, such as certain changes to protected locations or system-wide settings. Microsoft recommends minimizing privileges and notes that unnecessary elevation increases an application’s attack surface. If only a few commands need elevated rights, consider separating them into a helper process rather than running the entire workflow as administrator. Microsoft’s administrator-privileges guidance

UAC execution levels such as asInvoker, highestAvailable, and requireAdministrator are declarations used by executable application manifests. They do not add an embedded manifest to a plain batch file. Microsoft’s application-manifest documentation
