In iPadOS 18, go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts to add, pause, remove, or adjust the fetch schedule for an email account. Common providers guide you through setup; accounts that are not listed may require provider-specific server details.
Add an email account from a listed provider
- Open Settings on your iPad.
- Tap Apps, then Mail.
- Tap Mail Accounts, then Add Account.
- Choose the provider and follow its sign-in prompts. Apple gives iCloud, Microsoft Exchange, and Gmail as examples. Depending on the provider, you may need to enter credentials and verify the account before it is saved. See Apple’s iPad account setup guide.
Set up an account manually
If your provider is not listed, or Mail cannot detect its settings automatically, choose Add Other Account or Mail Account when those options appear. Enter the requested name, email address, password, and description. Mail will try to find the settings for you.
If automatic setup fails, select IMAP or POP and enter the incoming and outgoing mail server details supplied by your provider. The hostnames, any required ports, authentication details, and supported protocol depend on the provider; there are no universal values to enter. If you are unsure which protocol or settings to use, Apple advises contacting your email provider. Its email account setup instructions describe the automatic and manual flows.
Organizations may also configure mail accounts through device management, which can specify incoming and outgoing server information and authentication. That managed-device configuration is separate from the normal individual setup flow; most users do not need a management profile to add an account.

Pause Mail for an account without removing it
- Open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts.
- Tap the account you want to pause.
- For accounts from other providers, turn off Mail. For iCloud Mail, use Use on this iPad.
Turn the same control back on to resume using that account in Mail on the iPad. Apple documents these controls in its guide to adding and removing email accounts.
Remove an account from the iPad
- Go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts.
- Tap the account you want to remove.
- Tap Sign Out or Delete Account, depending on what the screen shows, and confirm if prompted.
This removes the account from Mail and other apps on the iPad that use it. It does not close or cancel the email account with its provider. To close the account itself, use the provider’s account-management process. You can add the account to the iPad again later.

Change when Mail fetches new messages
- Open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts.
- Tap Fetch New Data.
- Choose the available fetch option or schedule for the account.
This setting is relevant to accounts that do not support Push notifications. Apple says Automatically is the default: Mail downloads new data when the iPad is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. A timed schedule can fetch more often outside those conditions, but it does not guarantee instant delivery for an account without Push.

Mail’s settings also include options for Siri suggestions, Mail content in Search, the default mail app, message-list display, Privacy Protection, and Ask Before Deleting.
