Framework Laptop 16’s strongest long-term advantage is that several important parts are designed to be changed: its mainboard and Graphics Module can be upgraded, memory and storage use standard slots, and six Expansion Card slots let owners choose their ports. That makes future changes more plausible than on a conventional laptop, but it does not guarantee compatibility with every future part. Available sources do not establish six months of controlled ownership results for battery life, reliability, or performance, so this is an assessment of the platform’s documented upgrade path—not a personal six-month review.
What can you actually change?
Framework’s current Laptop 16 product page describes several replaceable or configurable elements. The practical distinction is between standard components you can upgrade today and modular systems whose future compatibility depends on specific parts and generations.

How useful is the modular design in everyday ownership?
Memory and storage are the clearest upgrade cases
Dual DDR5 SO-DIMM slots and standard M.2 storage slots make memory and storage the most straightforward parts to consider changing. Framework’s modules page also describes additional M.2 modules in 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 sizes. Those listed sizes do not mean every drive or module is compatible with every configuration; verify the relevant product and generation before ordering.
Expansion Cards make port selection flexible
The six Expansion Card slots allow owners to select from Framework’s port and function options instead of treating the original port layout as fixed. The product page specifies simultaneous display output on four slots, which is useful when planning a multi-display setup. Check the card’s function and your intended slot arrangement rather than assuming all cards serve the same purpose.

Graphics flexibility is distinctive, but conditional
The Graphics Module and Expansion Bay provide a more unusual route to changing graphics hardware than a typical laptop offers. Framework’s April 21, 2026 post, “Framework Laptop 16 upgrades and OCuLink Dev Kit”, says the Expansion Bay carries an internal PCIe x8 interface and describes development of an OCuLink adapter board that fits the Expansion Bay Shell. The post documents a development direction, not a generally available kit or a guarantee of future graphics upgrades. Check current retail status and compatibility before making a purchase decision around OCuLink.
What does independent review coverage add?
RTINGS’ 2026 Framework Laptop 16 review evaluates the machine in the context of repairability, upgradeability, customizable ports and input modules, and its replaceable discrete GPU module. Its observations apply to the configuration RTINGS tested; they should not be treated as results for every Laptop 16 configuration or as evidence of how all units perform after six months.

What can’t be concluded about six-month ownership?
The available sources do not establish controlled six-month results for reliability, battery life, sustained performance, or noise. A Reddit owner discussion about the Framework 16 includes individual accounts of battery life, thermals, graphics-module experience, and a reported port issue. Those posts can offer questions to investigate, but they are anecdotes: they do not establish typical battery runtime, failure rates, or a model-wide reliability pattern.
For a genuine six-month ownership verdict, a reviewer would need to identify the exact configuration and describe the workload, battery test method, performance conditions, and any repairs or parts changes. Without that evidence, claims such as “the battery lasts X hours” or “the ports commonly fail” would overstate what these sources show.

How should you compare it with another 16-inch laptop?
Compare the Laptop 16 on factors the manufacturer and review coverage document: access to replaceable components, the stated memory and storage slots, graphics-module approach, and port customization. For purchase price, total upgrade cost, weight, battery life, sustained performance, fan noise, warranty, and parts availability, use current figures for the exact competing configurations. The sources here do not provide a like-for-like comparison on those factors, so they cannot support a claim that the Framework is cheaper, lighter, longer-lasting, quieter, or better value than a particular alternative.
