If your iPhone feels slow or keeps freezing on iOS 17, first identify whether the problem affects the whole phone, one app, touch response, or an update progress screen. Then work through reversible checks: network, storage, app behavior, power settings, temperature, and battery condition. A slow iPhone does not by itself prove that iOS 17 has a specific bug.
First identify what is slow or frozen
Different symptoms call for different fixes. If only one app is stuck, focus on that app. If the whole phone feels slow, check the conditions and settings below. If taps are missed across the screen, treat that as a touch-response problem. If you see an Apple logo and progress bar, use the update or restore guidance in its own section rather than interrupting the process.
Network problems can make apps seem slow even when the iPhone itself is working normally. Apple notes that congestion or reconnecting to cell towers while moving can affect performance. Try a reliable Wi-Fi connection or test from another location. If cellular problems persist across locations, contact your carrier. Apple’s slow-performance checklist covers these distinctions.
Check the app and available storage
If one app is unresponsive
Close and reopen only the app that is not responding. Do not routinely swipe away every app. iOS manages background apps, and Apple cautions that unnecessary force-closing can make the phone feel slower because closed apps take longer to reopen while their data reloads. If the whole iPhone is sluggish
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Review the available space and Apple’s storage recommendations. Apple advises maintaining at least 1 GB of free space to avoid slowdowns; this is a recommendation, not a guaranteed performance threshold.
- If you need room, consider offloading an app you rarely use. Offloading frees the app’s storage while keeping its documents and data. Deleting an app removes it and its related data, so check what you may lose before deleting.
Check power settings, temperature, and battery condition
Low Power Mode
Low Power Mode reduces power use and can make some features work more slowly. If you need full performance and can do so safely, open Settings > Battery and turn Low Power Mode off.
Temperature
If the iPhone is unusually hot or cold, move it to a more moderate environment and allow it to return to normal operating conditions. Temperature can affect performance; avoid treating a temporary slowdown in extreme conditions as proof of a software defect.

Battery condition
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Rechargeable batteries lose capacity and peak performance as they age, and iOS may display battery-health information or recommend replacement. Apple does not give a universal battery-percentage threshold that proves a battery is causing lag, so use the on-screen condition and recommendation rather than diagnosing from a number alone. These checks are part of Apple’s slow-performance guidance.
Restart the iPhone if it remains unresponsive
A normal restart is for a phone that still responds. Force restart is different: use it when the iPhone will not respond well enough to turn off normally. The button sequence depends on the model.

- If the iPhone responds, restart it normally using the shutdown controls for that model, then turn it back on.
- If it is unresponsive and has Face ID, quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
- For iPhone 7 models and iPhone 6s or earlier, use the model-specific sequence in Apple’s force-restart instructions.
If the Apple logo or progress bar appears during an update or restore
An Apple logo and progress bar after an update, restore, or erase can move slowly or appear static. The time varies with the amount of data and the operation. For an over-the-air update, keep the iPhone connected to power and give the process time to finish. Apple’s explanation is at Apple logo with progress bar after updating or restoring.
If a restore or migration has stopped progressing
For an iPhone stuck on the Apple logo during restore or migration, Apple says to act only after the progress bar has not moved for at least one hour. Then connect the phone to a computer and follow Apple’s recovery-mode instructions. If the computer offers Update or Restore, choose Update first. Restore erases the iPhone. If recovery does not resolve the problem or the phone remains stuck at the logo, Apple says service may be needed.

If an iOS update will not install
Apple lists device compatibility, insufficient storage, download time, server access, and an incomplete update among possible reasons an update may fail. Try a stable Wi-Fi connection, avoid downloading other content at the same time, try another network or a computer, and download the update again if needed. When to contact Apple or your carrier
- Contact Apple or an authorized service provider if touch response remains unreliable after restarting, or if the iPhone cannot be recovered from an Apple-logo or progress-bar stall.
- Contact your carrier if cellular performance remains poor across locations after checking the phone and network conditions.
- If the iPhone will not turn on or its screen is black, follow Apple’s steps for an iPhone that won’t turn on.
