If Minecraft Java Edition shows GLFW error 65543: WGL: OpenGL profile requested but WGL_ARB_create_context_profile is unavailable, first check which graphics adapter the game is using, then update that adapter’s driver from the computer or GPU manufacturer and restart. If the graphics device itself cannot provide the graphics support required by your Minecraft version, a driver update cannot add that missing hardware capability.
What GLFW error 65543 means
The WGL message above indicates that Minecraft requested an OpenGL profile capability that Windows’ graphics interface could not provide. It is a useful clue, not a complete diagnosis: the same GLFW error number can appear with different platform-specific messages. The exact example documented in a Minecraft Forum support discussion from June 8, 2021 is a Windows/WGL report, not an official cross-platform explanation.

A graphics driver that is missing, outdated, or not being used by the game is a sensible first check. But the Minecraft version matters too. A computer that launched an older release may no longer meet the graphics requirements of a newer one.
How to troubleshoot the error

Record the complete error and system details
Copy the full GLFW message, including the text after the error number. Note your Minecraft Java Edition version, operating system, graphics device model, and whether the computer has both integrated and discrete graphics. The number 65543 alone does not identify the platform-specific cause.

Check which graphics adapter Minecraft is using
On a computer with switchable graphics, confirm that Minecraft is launching on the intended adapter. A laptop may have both an integrated GPU and a separate graphics card; the game may be using the integrated adapter when you expect it to use the discrete one. The exact selection controls vary by computer and operating-system version, so check your manufacturer’s instructions if you need help choosing an adapter.

Update the graphics driver from an official source
Get the current graphics driver from the computer manufacturer or the GPU manufacturer, as appropriate for your device. Install it, restart if prompted, and try launching Minecraft again. A 2021 forum reply recommends checking Intel drivers, but that discussion is troubleshooting context rather than official Minecraft support guidance. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities when the device maker provides the driver directly.

Compare the device with the requirements for your game version
Mojang’s current Minecraft Java Edition system requirements, published July 21, 2026, list a Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with at least 2 GB of VRAM among the minimum graphics specifications. The minimum performance target is 1080p at 30 FPS on the Fast preset; the recommended target is 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings, with 16 GB of memory and a graphics card with 6 GB of VRAM. These are published targets, not a guarantee that every listed device will work with every computer configuration.
The requirements page gives separate examples for discrete graphics and integrated graphics. Check the examples and capability requirements on the page rather than relying on a GPU brand or model family alone.

Decide whether this is a driver issue or a hardware limit
If the correct driver is installed and Minecraft is using the intended adapter, but that GPU does not support the required graphics capability, reinstalling drivers cannot create support the hardware lacks. The practical options may be a compatible graphics card or a replacement computer. For a desktop upgrade, compatibility depends on more than graphics support: check the operating system and driver support, VRAM, power supply, physical fit, and budget before choosing hardware.
Why an older Minecraft version may have worked
Minecraft’s graphics requirements have changed over time. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.17 release notes describe a move to an OpenGL 3.2 core profile. Later, the 1.21.9 release notes say OpenGL 3.3 became required to play, up from 3.2. Those notes also state that OpenGL 4.0 had been the posted minimum requirement since 2017. These are version-specific statements, so an older forum discussion should not be treated as a definitive guide to current requirements.

Mojang’s current requirements page warns that below-spec hardware may still launch Java Edition, but performance and visual quality are not guaranteed; the game may struggle or fail to launch in the future as Minecraft transitions away from OpenGL and toward Vulkan. Check the current requirements for the release you want to play rather than assuming that a driver update alone will resolve every graphics error.

What not to try as a routine fix
- Do not copy a random OpenGL DLL into Java or Minecraft folders. Forum suggestions of this kind are not established as safe, current fixes by the official sources cited here.
- Do not assume software rendering is a normal solution. It can impose a severe performance penalty, and there is no official endorsement of it as a general remedy for this error.
- Do not apply the WGL diagnosis to every GLFW 65543 message. If your message names GLX, NSGL, or another platform interface instead, use the full message and your operating system to guide diagnosis.
