You can reset Face ID without erasing your iPhone: open Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Reset Face ID, then tap Set Up Face ID and follow the prompts. Before resetting, check for a software, settings, camera obstruction, or positioning issue; you’ll need your device passcode to use Face ID and may need it during setup.
Before resetting Face ID, check these fixes
Apple recommends trying basic troubleshooting first. These checks can help identify a setting or camera-view issue without removing your current Face ID enrollment.
- Update iOS: Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install an available update.
- Check Face ID settings: Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Confirm Face ID is set up and that the feature you’re trying to use—such as iPhone Unlock, iTunes & App Store, or app sign-in—is enabled. Face ID works alongside your passcode; it does not replace it.
- Clear the TrueDepth camera: Wipe away smudges and check whether a case or screen protector covers any part of the camera area. Remove the obstruction and try again.
- Make sure your face is visible: Keep your eyes, nose, and mouth unobstructed, and look toward the camera. Apple recommends holding the iPhone about 25–50 cm from your face, at arm’s length or closer. Apple Support: Face ID troubleshooting
- Check orientation and compatibility: iPhone 13 and later support landscape Face ID with iOS 16 or later; earlier iPhone models require portrait orientation. Face ID with a mask works in portrait on iPhone 12 and later with iOS 15.4 or later. Apple Support: Face ID troubleshooting
- Restart the iPhone: Restart it, then enter your passcode and test Face ID again.
How to reset Face ID and set it up again
Resetting removes the existing Face ID enrollment, so you’ll scan your face again afterward. It does not require erasing the iPhone.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Face ID & Passcode and enter your device passcode if prompted.
- Tap Reset Face ID.
- Tap Set Up Face ID, position your face in the frame, and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the scan.
Apple’s setup guide says a passcode is required to use Face ID. You may also be asked to enter it during setup or after restarting the iPhone. Apple iPhone User Guide: Set up Face ID

If setup still fails
If you cannot complete enrollment after checking the camera view and positioning, or the TrueDepth camera appears not to work, the problem may require service. Apple advises having the device serviced by a trained technician. It warns that improper repair or modification, or non-genuine components in the laser systems, can interfere with safety mechanisms and cause hazardous exposure or eye or skin injury. What happens to Face ID data when you reset?

Don't insert pick over 3 mm, and don't insert your pick in left edge, as may damage internal components. Remove the screw securing the display connector bracket and disconnect the front sensor cable. Connect the new screen cable and please carefully align and press down on one side until it clicks into place. Do not press down on the middle.
