The right gaming setup is the one that suits the games you play, the platform you use, your budget, and the space you have—not the one with the most expensive gear. Start with those constraints, then choose a system and display that work well together. Add input and audio gear you will actually use, and plan the desk for comfort and practical placement.

Start with your games, platform, and priorities

Before choosing equipment, decide what the setup needs to do. A PC player and a console player share some needs—such as a display, audio, and a comfortable place to play—but their system and input requirements differ.

  • Games: Check the recommended system requirements for the games you want to play, especially when planning a PC build. Intel’s PC-building guide recommends using game requirements as a planning reference.
  • Platform: Choose a gaming PC or console based on the games you want to play and your preferences. Make sure accessories are compatible with that platform.
  • Experience: Decide whether responsive play, immersive visuals, voice communication, or streaming matters most to you.
  • Constraints: Set a budget and measure the available space before deciding what can fit.

Microsoft likewise recommends matching a gaming PC’s features to the games you play, the monitor you want, and your budget. Its Windows 11 gaming PC guide is useful for framing those choices, but it does not establish one ideal specification for every player.

Match the system to the display

A display is central to the experience, but its specifications should make sense for the system and games. On a PC, consider the graphics capability alongside the resolution and refresh goals you want. A higher-spec display is not automatically a better purchase if the rest of the setup cannot make good use of it.

Intel notes in its PC-building guide that pairing powerful components with a 1080p, 60Hz display may leave some of that hardware underused. That is vendor guidance, not a universal performance benchmark; the sensible balance depends on the games, hardware, and experience you are aiming for. Microsoft also explains that the GPU affects visual quality and frame rate, and advises matching graphics capability to display resolution in its gaming PC guide.

For a console setup, check display compatibility and the console’s supported capabilities rather than assuming a PC-oriented component list applies unchanged. In either case, choose the display as part of the whole setup, not as an isolated upgrade.

Choose input and audio gear for how you play

PC gaming commonly starts with a keyboard and mouse; console gaming generally starts with a compatible controller. The right peripherals depend on platform, game, and personal preference. Mechanical keyboards and high-DPI mice are options, not requirements.

  • Keyboard and mouse: Standard PC inputs. Choose a layout and feel that suit your games and desk space.
  • Controller: A practical starting point for console play; confirm compatibility if you are buying an additional controller or using one across platforms.
  • Headset or speakers: A headset can provide personal audio and voice communication. Speakers may suit players who prefer room audio and do not need private listening.
  • Mouse pad: A common PC accessory that gives the mouse a defined surface; its size should fit your available desk area.

HP’s overview of gaming accessories covers keyboards, mice, headsets, and mouse pads, while Intel stresses that peripheral choices largely come down to personal preference.

Plan the desk, display placement, and comfort

Measure the play area before arranging equipment. Place the display where it is easy to view, leave enough room for the inputs you use, and consider chair fit and cable organization. An ergonomic desk and chair can help make the space more practical, but these are setup considerations rather than medical advice.

Intel’s gaming desk setup guide discusses ergonomics, audio, display placement, and input placement. Dell’s gaming setup overview also includes desk and chair choices and cable organization among typical setup considerations. Keep appearance in view if it matters to you, but do not let decorative choices interfere with fit or function.

Add optional gear only when it solves a need

Extra equipment makes sense when it supports a specific activity or room. Streaming gear is not a universal gaming requirement: consider a webcam, microphone, or lighting only if you plan to stream or need them for another use. A monitor arm may help with display placement, and additional cooling may be relevant to some setups. Intel discusses streaming and monitor arms in its desk setup guide; Dell lists webcams and cooling among possible setup elements in its overview.

Build in a practical order

  1. List your games and platform. Note the titles you play, whether you use PC or console, and any compatibility requirements.
  2. Set your priorities and constraints. Decide what matters most—such as responsiveness, visuals, voice chat, or streaming—and establish your budget and available space.
  3. Choose the system and display together. For a PC, check game requirements and balance the system’s capability with the display you want. For a console, confirm the display and accessories suit that platform.
  4. Add the essential inputs and audio. Start with the keyboard and mouse for PC or a compatible controller for console, then choose a headset or speakers according to how you play.
  5. Arrange the space before buying extras. Check display and input placement, chair fit, and cable routing. Add accessories only if they address a real need.

This approach avoids treating any single component list as a universal answer. It also makes trade-offs visible: a display goal affects the system you need, while desk size and platform determine which peripherals are practical.

Frequently Asked Questions

What accessories does every gamer need?

There is no universal accessory list. PC players commonly start with a keyboard and mouse, while console players generally need a compatible controller; either may benefit from a headset, depending on audio and communication preferences.

What should every gaming setup have?

At minimum, a gaming platform and a compatible display, plus the inputs and audio arrangement that suit the games and the player. A comfortable, workable space matters too; streaming gear and decorative extras are optional.
