You can open apps, navigate the screen, tap or press controls, make gestures, enter and edit text, and tailor commands to your own tasks. What’s available can vary by app, language, region, and software version.
What Voice Control can do
Voice Control is an Accessibility feature for interacting with the device by speaking. It can navigate between screens, activate controls, perform gestures and button actions, and work with text. The available commands depend on the app and what you are doing. To see what applies, say “Show commands” or open Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control > Commands. Apple’s current guides cover iPhone and iPad.
How to set up and turn on Voice Control
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control.
- Select the setup option and connect to Wi-Fi while the required file downloads.
- Once setup is complete, Voice Control works without an internet connection. Turn it on or off in Settings, or use Control Center, Siri, or the Accessibility Shortcut if configured on your device.
While it is active, “Stop listening” pauses recognition and “Start listening” resumes it. Apple’s older overview also documents “Go to sleep” and “Wake up”; check the command list on your device for the wording available in its software version. Navigate and activate controls by voice
Speak a direct command such as “Open Control Center,” “Go home,” or “Turn up volume.” For an on-screen control, use an action with its visible name, such as “Tap [item name]” or “Long press [item name].” Exact commands depend on the app and task, so “Show commands” is a useful way to check available actions. Apple’s current iPhone instructions also include a Voice Control Tutorial.

Target something you can’t name
Use names or numbers
Say “Show names” or “Show numbers” to label items on screen. Then pair the action with the label—for example, tap the item by its displayed name or number. This is helpful when a control’s spoken name is unclear or there are several similar items.
Zoom in with the grid
Say “Show grid” to place numbered sections over the screen. Speak a number to zoom into that area, then use the finer grid to identify the target. The grid can also help locate a drag-and-drop destination or guide a gesture. Commands for displaying or hiding overlays may differ by software version; consult the live command list rather than relying on an older phrase.

Dictate, spell, and edit text
Voice Control has three modes for handling speech. Say the mode name to switch, if it is available in your language:
- Dictation mode: enters spoken words as text.
- Spelling mode: enters characters, which can be useful for passwords, web addresses, or letter sequences that are not ordinary words. Apple says this mode is not available in every Voice Control language.
- Command mode: responds to recognized commands and ignores other speech instead of typing it into the active field.
Voice Control can label text so you can work with a line, word, or character, then use commands to select or change the labeled text. Apple’s separate iPad dictation reference lists commands for punctuation, capitalization, spaces, new lines and paragraphs, replacement, insertion, selection, deletion, undo and redo, and emoji in some languages. Those dictation commands are not universal: Apple says availability varies by language and region, and its guide specifies U.S. English on supported iPad models. Customize commands and vocabulary
In Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control > Commands, you can review command groups and, where supported, enable or disable individual commands. Apple also describes a Confirmation Required option, which makes an action wait for confirmation.
Custom commands can be set to work in any app or only in selected apps. Depending on the command, they can insert text, run a recorded gesture, run a Siri Shortcut, or play a recorded sequence of commands. You can also teach Voice Control words and pronunciations or import a vocabulary list; custom vocabulary is not supported in some languages. Adjust listening and feedback
Available settings can include confirmation feedback, sounds, hints, overlays, and Attention Aware behavior on Face ID devices. The exact options can differ between iPhone and iPad and across software versions. Apple also documents a Bluetooth headset preference. A headset is optional; Apple cautions that AirPods or third-party headsets can affect audio quality and features such as Siri announcements and Share Audio.
Language and regional availability
Voice Control is not available in every language or region, and feature support can vary. Apple’s customization article published March 20, 2025, listed English (United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, and India), German (Germany), Spanish (Spain, Mexico, and United States), French (France), Japanese (Japan), and Chinese (Mainland China and Hong Kong). Check Apple’s current instructions for your location and software version before relying on a particular command or customization feature.
