AM and FM are two ways radio stations encode sound onto a radio wave: AM varies the wave’s amplitude, while FM varies its frequency. That difference affects bandwidth and how some noise is heard, but it does not make one service universally better or guarantee that one will reach farther. Reception depends on the station, receiver, location, terrain, time of day, and interference.
What AM and FM mean
Both names describe modulation: the method used to vary a radio carrier so it can convey audio. In amplitude modulation (AM), the carrier’s amplitude changes in response to the audio signal. In frequency modulation (FM), the carrier’s frequency changes instead. The FCC describes the two methods in its technical report on radio broadcasting.
How the differences affect listening
Noise and interference
The FCC’s historical technical discussion describes FM as gaining effectiveness against some static and man-made disturbances compared with AM. That is a qualified engineering observation, not a promise that any FM station will sound clearer than any AM station. Local interference, signal strength, station facilities, and receiver design all matter, and the cited sources do not establish a contemporary head-to-head audio-quality result.
Bandwidth and FM channels
FM’s noise-related advantages come with a wider bandwidth requirement. For U.S. FM broadcasting, an FCC rules document gives a band of 88–108 MHz and channels 200 kHz wide. These are U.S. figures from the cited FCC document, not a global allocation claim. The reviewed sources do not establish current U.S. AM band edges, so no AM range is given here.

Why AM reception can change after dark
The FCC describes daytime AM propagation as predominantly groundwave. At night, skywave propagation can carry AM signals many hundreds of miles, according to the agency’s 1987 notice on the AM broadcast service. This is a description of propagation potential, not a typical or guaranteed listening distance. Signals from farther stations can also overlap on the same frequency, increasing interference and making a desired station harder to hear.
That nighttime behavior is one reason a simple claim such as “AM travels farther” is incomplete: time of day changes propagation, and greater reach can bring more competing signals. The sources reviewed do not provide a directly comparable contemporary coverage radius for FM, so a universal range ranking is not supported.

Which should you listen to?
Choose based on the station and conditions where you listen, rather than assuming AM or FM is always better. FM may be preferable when you want to avoid some kinds of static; AM can be useful for stations whose signals reach you by groundwave or, at night, skywave. Neither tendency guarantees better reception in a particular place.
- For either service, reception varies with location, terrain, time, interference, station facilities, and the receiver.
- To listen to both services on terrestrial radio, use a receiver that tunes AM and FM. No particular model or device performance is established by the sources cited here.
