A Windows 11 chime can come from an app notification, a Windows system-event sound, or a device connecting and disconnecting. The sound alone does not identify the cause. Note whether a notification appears or a device changes state at the same moment, then use that evidence to narrow it down.
Identify the chime by what happens at the same time
Use the timing and visible activity as clues before changing settings. Microsoft Support describes notifications as a way to keep you informed about updates, messages, and alerts; those alerts can include sounds. A device connection change can also be accompanied by a tone.
| What you observe | Likely path to check | Targeted next step |
|---|---|---|
| A banner or recent notification appears when the chime sounds | App notification | Check that app’s notification sound setting. Microsoft’s Windows notification settings guide |
| The tone matches a repeatable Windows event, without a notification | System event sound | Use the Sounds tab’s Test control to identify a matching event. Microsoft’s sound settings guide |
| A peripheral disappears or reconnects at the same time | USB or other device connection | Disconnect or reconnect one accessory at a time. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance |
| A Bluetooth accessory drops or reconnects with the chime | Bluetooth connection | Check the accessory’s charge and range, then investigate power saving, drivers, and interference. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance |
| No notification or device change is apparent | General audio configuration | Use Windows audio troubleshooting and check output and volume settings. Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting steps |
Check app notifications first
- Open Settings > System > Notifications.
- Look for a recent notification that arrived at the same time as the chime. The sender and timing are more useful than the sound by itself.
- Open the likely app’s notification options. If you want to keep its visual alerts but stop its chime, turn off Play a sound for that app.
- If you need a short observation period, turn on Do Not Disturb. This can quiet notifications while you watch for a pattern, but it may also suppress alerts you want.
Change only the sender you have evidence for rather than disabling all notifications.
Test Windows system-event sounds
System sounds are configured separately from app notifications. Search Windows for Change system sounds, or open Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings and select the Sounds tab.

#1 Best Overall
- External computer speaker in Black (set of 2) for amplifying PC or laptop audio
- USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
- In-line volume control for easy access
- Blue LED lights; metal finish and scratch-free padded base
- Bottom radiator for “springy” bass sound
- Review Program Events for an event whose timing or sound matches what you hear.
- Select a candidate event and choose Test to hear its assigned sound.
- If the test confirms an unwanted event, select it, choose No Sounds, and apply the change.
Mute only the matching event. Removing sounds from every event can silence other useful Windows cues.
Investigate the connection only if the sound tracks a device
USB and USB-C accessories
If the chime resembles a connection or removal tone, check whether a USB device, dock, headset, or other accessory disappears and returns at the same moment. Windows can show notifications about USB-C connection problems, but a chime alone does not establish that USB is the source or that a port is faulty.

As a controlled check, disconnect unused devices and reconnect accessories one at a time. For USB-C connection notifications, review the USB settings and behavior described in Microsoft’s USB-C guidance. Changing one connection at a time makes it easier to tell which change affects the chime.
Bluetooth accessories
Take this path when the chime coincides with a Bluetooth device dropping or reconnecting. Make sure the accessory is powered, charged, and within range. If disconnections continue, Microsoft recommends checking power-saving behavior and drivers; an unshielded USB 3.0 device nearby can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth connections. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.

Use general audio troubleshooting if the clues do not fit
If you cannot match the chime to a notification, system event, or device change, use Windows’ general audio checks. These can help uncover sound configuration problems, but they do not prove that the chime is caused by an audio fault.
- Open the Get Help app and run the Windows 11 audio troubleshooter.
- Check that the intended audio output device is selected and enabled.
- Confirm the device is not muted and that the volume is at a usable level.
- Check whether audio enhancements are enabled and whether changing that setting affects the issue.

Keep alerts visible without audible chimes
If you need alerts but do not want notification sounds, Windows accessibility settings include visual alternatives, such as flashing the active window or the screen for audio notifications. This lets you retain a visual cue while avoiding audible alerts. See Microsoft’s Windows accessibility guidance.
