You may be able to improve slow Wi-Fi by fixing a driver, adapter, router, or interference problem—but Intel’s guidance does not show that a Windows setting will reliably double your speed. Start by finding out whether the slowdown affects only this computer, then check its Wi-Fi capabilities and apply settings that match its adapter and router.

First find out whether Wi-Fi is the bottleneck

A speed test measures the connection under the conditions at that moment; it does not identify what caused a slow result. The problem may be the laptop’s driver or adapter settings, the router or access point, network configuration, interference, or the internet service itself. Intel identifies these as possible contributors in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

  1. Compare devices in the same place. Run a test on the Intel-equipped laptop and another device connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If both are slow, look first at the router, internet service, or local network rather than assuming the laptop’s adapter is at fault.
  2. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection, if practical. If a wired device is also slow, the internet service or router connection may be limiting performance. If wired performance is better, investigate the Wi-Fi link.
  3. Test near the router. If the laptop performs better nearby, distance, obstacles, or interference may be affecting the wireless connection. If it remains slow, check the adapter, driver, and router compatibility.

Keep the location, network, and test conditions consistent when comparing results. A single speed test is not enough to diagnose the cause.

Check the laptop’s Wi-Fi adapter and supported standards

Before changing settings or considering hardware, identify what the computer can actually use. Wi-Fi performance depends on both ends of the connection: a laptop cannot use a newer Wi-Fi generation or band that its adapter or router does not support.

  • 【Compatible System】Support Windows 11/10 64-bit, WiFi and Bluetooth drivers need to be installed on the running PC (search "AX210NGW" from Intel website to download and install wifi and Bluetooth drivers).
  1. Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters to find the wireless adapter’s name. The computer maker’s specifications can also identify the installed adapter.
  2. Open Command Prompt and run netsh wlan show drivers.
  3. Read the Radio types supported line. Microsoft says 802.11be indicates Wi-Fi 7 support, while 802.11ax indicates Wi-Fi 6/6E support. Confirm the router supports the same generation and the relevant band.

Microsoft says Wi-Fi 7 support in Windows begins with Windows 11 version 24H2. The adapter, router, Windows version, and local configuration all affect availability. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi guidance for Windows for compatibility details.

Microsoft describes Wi-Fi 7’s 320 MHz ultra-wide bandwidth in the 6 GHz band as doubling speed to devices, and says Wi-Fi 7 can deliver up to four times the speeds of Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E, and close to six times the speeds of Wi-Fi 5. Those are technology-level claims that depend on compatible hardware; they do not predict a particular laptop’s internet speed or the result of changing an Intel setting.

Check drivers before tuning adapter properties

Intel recommends starting with the laptop manufacturer’s wireless driver for that model. The manufacturer may tailor drivers for the computer’s hardware and configuration. Intel also provides generic wireless drivers, but an update is not necessary simply because a newer version exists: Intel advises updating when troubleshooting an issue. See Intel’s quick checks for Wi-Fi issues.

  • Check the laptop maker’s support page for the exact computer model and operating system.
  • If the problem continues, check Intel’s support options for the adapter. Before replacing an OEM driver, follow the laptop maker’s instructions and note the current driver version so you can recover if needed.
  • Restart the computer after installing a driver, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and compare performance under the same conditions as your baseline.

Use adapter settings that match the Wi-Fi generation

Intel’s documented recommendations are defaults to check, not universal speed hacks. Property names and availability vary by adapter, driver, and Windows version. To inspect them, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click the Intel wireless adapter, choose Properties, and open the Advanced tab if it is present. Change only settings exposed by your adapter, and record the original values first.

For Intel 802.11ax adapters

Intel’s recommended 802.11ax settings page specifies a Windows 10 64-bit environment and lists these values:

Adapter property Intel’s listed value What to know
Channel Width for 5GHz Auto The access point determines the channel width.
Roaming Aggressiveness Medium Property availability and behavior can depend on the adapter and driver.
Throughput Booster Disabled Intel does not recommend enabling it as a general speed fix.
Transmit Power Highest Use the listed value where the adapter exposes the property.
802.11n/ac/ax Wireless Mode 802.11ax The router must support 5 GHz and be configured for 11ax to use these capabilities.

Intel also advises enabling supported channel widths and wireless modes on the access point for performance and compatibility. Do not change the router’s channel as a blind tweak: Intel cautions that manual channel changes are for users who understand Wi-Fi channels and can identify congestion.

Signal conditions and router configuration can make one band or location work better than another. If a connection improves near the router, investigate placement and obstacles before buying hardware. Avoid a fixed channel recommendation: the best choice depends on local congestion and router configuration, and Intel advises changing channels only when you can assess that congestion. See Intel’s wireless performance optimization guidance.

When a router upgrade may help

Consider a compatible Wi-Fi 6 router only if your checks point to the existing router as a limitation—for example, it does not support a Wi-Fi generation or band your laptop can use, or it is the source of poor performance across devices. A router upgrade cannot make an older laptop adapter support a newer Wi-Fi standard, and the available guidance does not establish that replacing a router will double your internet speed.

Intel’s optional Connectivity Performance Suite user guide describes a utility that displays access-point speed and recommendations, including when to consider an access-point upgrade because the computer has a newer Wi-Fi generation. Treat this as a diagnostic aid, not a guarantee of improvement.

What a realistic improvement looks like

If the problem is a misconfigured adapter, outdated driver associated with an issue, poor signal, or an incompatible router setup, correcting it may improve the connection. The amount depends on the cause and the equipment. Intel’s published recommendations provide troubleshooting steps and suggested defaults; they do not establish that any setting change will double Wi-Fi or internet speed.
