Yes, an ESP32 or ESP8266 can use an external antenna—but only if the exact module or development board provides a compatible connector and an active external RF path. The chip-family name alone does not establish that. Check the board documentation or schematic before buying an antenna or connecting one.
How to tell whether your board supports an external antenna
Look up the exact module or board model and revision. Its datasheet, schematic, or hardware design guide should show an RF connector or an antenna feed routed for external use. Some boards may require an RF-path change or jumper; the wiring varies, so do not assume that a connector or antenna option on one ESP board applies to another.
For example, Espressif documents the ESP32-WROOM-32U with an external antenna connector. ESP8266EX designs can use external antenna configurations too, but that chip-level capability does not confirm that a particular ESP8266 development board routes the RF signal to a connector. See Espressif’s ESP32-WROOM-32U datasheet, ESP8266EX datasheet, and ESP8266 hardware design guidelines.
What antenna fits an ESP32-WROOM-32U?
For the WROOM-32U, Espressif specifies a 2.4 GHz antenna, 50 Ω impedance, and a connector that matches the module. The datasheet lists Hirose U.FL, I-PEX MHF I, and Amphenol AMC as compatible connector families. Confirm the exact connector on your module and antenna; similar-looking miniature RF connectors are not necessarily interchangeable.

- 【Large Storage Capacity】The ESP32 module integrates 8 MB RAM and 16 MB Flash and provides enough storage for the development of complex applications.
Espressif states that the antenna gain should not exceed 2.33 dBi, the gain of the antenna used for that module’s certification. A different antenna type or gain may require additional testing, such as EMC testing; requirements depend on the certification type. This 2.33 dBi figure is specific to the ESP32-WROOM-32U documentation, not a universal limit for all ESP32 or ESP8266 products. Consult the module datasheet for the applicable requirements.
How to choose an external antenna
A search such as “2.4 GHz U.FL Wi-Fi antenna” can help find candidates, but the search phrase alone does not prove compatibility. Check each item against your board’s documentation:

- 【MODERN USB TYPE-C CONNECTIVITY】USB Type-C port for data transfer and power, compatible with modern MacBooks, Windows PCs, and other devices. Includes a USB Type-C cable.
- 【Secure Screw Terminal Base】 Ideal for permanent installations, providing stable, mess-free connections that keep cables and wires organized and reliable.
- Connector: Match the antenna connector to the board connector. If they differ, determine whether a suitable coax pigtail or adapter is appropriate for the installation.
- Frequency and impedance: For ESP32-WROOM-32U, choose an antenna specified for 2.4 GHz and 50 Ω.
- Gain and certification: Check the exact module’s certification documentation and antenna limits. Do not apply the WROOM-32U figure to another module without documentation.
- Cable and placement: Select cable length and antenna location for the enclosure and installation, while keeping the RF path and antenna placement in mind.
- RF routing: Confirm that the board actually routes its RF signal to the external connector and that any required jumper or RF-path configuration is set correctly.
The cited documentation does not provide comparative range results for retail antennas. Do not assume a particular antenna will deliver a stated range or improvement without reliable testing for the specific board and installation.
ESP8266 external-antenna design details
Espressif’s ESP8266 hardware design guide describes on-board, external, IPEX, and ceramic-chip antenna configurations for ESP8266EX designs. It lists the chip’s LNA antenna interface as 39 + j6 Ω and recommends retaining the pi-type matching network. That chip-level impedance is not a ready-made specification for attaching an antenna directly: a board’s matching components, RF switch, and connector routing determine how its RF path is implemented. Check the exact board schematic before making a connection.

RF layout and antenna placement
For ESP32 designs, Espressif recommends a 50 Ω RF trace, a short and consistent-width path without branches, and dense ground vias nearby. It also calls for clearance under the IPEX antenna connector and separation between the RF path or antenna and high-frequency signals and components. Module and baseboard placement can affect antenna performance, so the surrounding board and enclosure matter too. These are design recommendations, not measured-range guarantees. See Espressif’s ESP32 hardware design guidelines.
