The Dyson Supersonic Nural adds automatic, sensor-based features to the Supersonic design, but whether it is a worthwhile upgrade depends on how you dry and style your hair. Its main additions are heat adjustment as the dryer approaches your hair, attachment-specific settings, pause detection, and a redesigned diffuser for waves and curls. If those conveniences do not matter to you, the original Supersonic may still meet your needs.
What is the Dyson Supersonic Nural?
The Nural is a Supersonic hair dryer with sensors and compatible attachments that enable three features: Scalp protect mode, Attachment learning, and Pause detect. Dyson’s feature descriptions explain how the dryer behaves; they are not proof that it prevents all heat damage or improves scalp health for every user.
In its product information, Dyson says Scalp protect mode uses a Time of Flight sensor to measure distance and reduce heat as the dryer moves closer to the hair. The company’s comparison page describes a 55°C close-drying condition for gentle drying, while noting that conditions during use can affect the preset temperature. Treat 55°C as Dyson’s stated operating description, not a guarantee of the temperature in every use.
What does the Nural add over the original Supersonic?

How Scalp protect mode works—and what it does not promise
Dyson says a Time of Flight sensor projects an invisible infrared beam to measure the distance between the dryer and the hair. When Scalp protect mode is activated, the dryer reduces air temperature as it moves closer. Dyson lists the Gentle air attachment and Styling concentrator as compatible with this mode.

This is an automatic heat-adjustment feature, not a medical claim. Dyson’s description does not establish that the mode prevents all heat damage, guarantees a particular result for every user, or improves scalp health. In a June 22, 2025 hands-on comparison, TechRadar’s reviewer said the mode worked reliably during their testing and that airflow still dried their hair quickly while using less heat. That is the reviewer’s reported experience, not a universal outcome.
Attachment learning and compatibility
Attachment learning is most useful if you use the compatible Nural attachments: the dryer can identify them and apply associated settings. Dyson says previous Supersonic attachments generally fit the Nural, with the Wide-tooth comb as an exception. Physical fit does not mean full feature support: older attachments do not enable the Nural’s Attachment learning feature.
Attachment bundles can vary by market, and the available information does not establish the contents of every regional package. Check the exact bundle offered where you plan to buy, especially if you want a particular attachment.

- Dome mode: intended to enhance natural waves or curls.
- Diffuse mode: intended to add volume at the roots for textured curls and coils.
These are intended uses, not guaranteed results across hair types or routines. TechRadar’s reviewer noted that the Nural diffuser differs from the Supersonic r’s traditional one-piece diffuser. If the diffuser is a key reason for upgrading, consider whether its two-mode approach suits your styling habits rather than assuming it will produce the same result for everyone.

The Nural is the more compelling choice if you will use automatic heat adjustment, attachment-specific settings, pause detection, or the Wave+Curl diffuser. The original Supersonic may be the more practical choice if your current dryer and attachments already cover your needs and you do not value those additions.

There is not enough verified pricing or availability information here to say whether the Nural is worth a particular premium in your country. Compare the current local price, included attachments, and stock for the exact models you are considering. That matters especially when weighing a secondhand original against a discounted new Nural: condition, bundle, and local price can change the value calculation.
Maintenance to factor into ownership
Dyson recommends cleaning the filter monthly and provides instructions on its product page. Regular filter care is part of owning the dryer, so check Dyson’s cleaning directions for the model and follow them as specified.
