To insert a picture in PowerPoint, open Insert > Pictures and choose the source where the image is stored. The exact option names and available sources vary by platform, app version, and account: a file on your computer, Microsoft’s stock library, an online search, cloud storage, or a mobile device may each have a different route.
Choose an image source
Microsoft Support describes the basic task simply: “You can add one or more images to a slide.” The most useful insertion method depends on where the image lives and which PowerPoint app you are using.
| Image source | Where it is available | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Device or file | PowerPoint desktop; PowerPoint for the web | Browse to an image stored locally. On Mac, Microsoft also documents network locations and iCloud Drive. |
| Stock Images | Availability and library vary by product and account | Microsoft 365 subscribers can access a growing library. Office 2021 and non-subscribers using Office for the web receive a portion of the library. |
| Online search | Supported desktop and web experiences | Search for an image from PowerPoint; some desktop flows offer filters. Online availability does not grant usage rights. |
| Cloud or mobile | Depends on app and device | PowerPoint for the web lists OneDrive and Mobile Device. Mac workflows also document iCloud Drive and Continuity Camera. |
| Screenshot | Desktop PowerPoint | Insert an open window image or capture a screen clipping. Microsoft lists screenshot capture as desktop-only. |
| Icons and other visuals | Depends on product and version | The Insert interface may include icons, shapes, SmartArt, and Stock Images categories such as illustrations, stickers, or videos. |
Insert a picture from your device
- Open the slide where you want the picture.
- Choose Insert > Pictures, then select the option for a local device. Depending on your version, it may be called This Device, Picture From File, or something similar.
- Browse to the image, select it, and insert it. On Mac, the file may also be available from a network location or iCloud Drive.
Microsoft’s instructions for PowerPoint for the web also include This Device as a source. The exact menu labels can change across platforms and versions. Microsoft’s desktop picture-insertion guide and its PowerPoint for the web guide describe the supported workflows.
Use Stock Images
Choose Insert > Pictures > Stock Images where that option appears. Microsoft describes the library as containing thousands of assets, but does not give an exact count in its support material. Library access is not identical for every user: Microsoft 365 subscribers can access a growing library, while Office 2021 and non-subscribers using Office for the web receive a portion. Stock categories can differ by product and version. Microsoft’s Stock Images and icons guidance outlines the available asset types.

Search online for a picture
In supported PowerPoint experiences, choose Insert > Pictures > Online Pictures or Search on Web, then select an image and insert it. Some desktop workflows provide filters for narrowing results. These labels and features are not universal across PowerPoint versions. Check the image’s license and usage terms before adding it to a presentation; appearing in search results does not mean an image is free to reuse. See Microsoft’s picture-insertion instructions.
Use OneDrive, a phone, or another connected source
PowerPoint for the web lists OneDrive and Mobile Device alongside This Device and Stock Images. On Mac, Microsoft documents ways to use pictures available through iCloud Drive or Continuity Camera. The source options depend on the PowerPoint product, platform, and device; look under Insert > Pictures for the choices available in your app. Microsoft’s web instructions and its Office for Mac picture guide describe these routes.

Microsoft’s screenshot instructions explain the desktop controls.
Insert icons or related visuals
For a symbol, diagram, or other visual rather than a photograph, check the Insert tab for options such as Icons, Shapes, and SmartArt. Move, resize, and crop a picture
Move and resize
Select the picture to move it on the slide or drag a sizing handle to change its dimensions. PowerPoint for the web supports moving and resizing inserted pictures as well as basic cropping. Microsoft’s web guide describes the picture controls.
Crop to fit a layout
Select the picture, then use Picture Format > Crop to trim its visible area. Supported desktop versions also provide cropping to shapes or aspect ratios. Cropping normally leaves the parts outside the crop embedded in the presentation, where they may be recoverable. If the hidden content is sensitive, do not rely on cropping alone: use Compress Pictures and delete cropped areas to remove them and help reduce file size. Microsoft’s crop and compression guidance explains the controls and retained image data.
