Sony announced PlayStation 5 Pro on September 10, 2024, during a technical presentation led by PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny. Sony said the upgraded console would launch on November 7, 2024, with hardware and image-processing improvements aimed at sharper visuals and smoother performance in games enhanced for PS5 Pro.
What Sony announced
PlayStation 5 Pro is an upgraded version of the PS5. Sony presented it as a way for supported games to deliver better image quality and higher or more consistent frame rates, with fewer trade-offs between visual detail and performance. The announcement and launch details are in Sony’s September 10, 2024 announcement and its November 7, 2024 launch release.

What is different from the regular PS5?
Sony said PS5 Pro has a GPU with 67% more compute units than the base PS5, memory that is 28% faster, and rendering that is up to 45% faster. Those are Sony Interactive Entertainment’s figures from 2024, not results from independent benchmarks. They describe hardware and rendering capability, not a guaranteed percentage improvement in every game.
Ray tracing and PSSR
Sony also highlighted advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its AI-assisted upscaling technology. In its official PS5 Pro reveal video, PlayStation described sharper 4K image clarity and higher or more consistent frame rates in supported games.

Improvements depend on the game
PS5 Pro features are available only in select games enhanced for the console, and their effect varies by title. A PS5 game does not automatically receive the same image or performance uplift simply because it runs on PS5 Pro. For a particular game, the relevant question is whether it has a PS5 Pro enhancement and what that enhancement changes.

Sony’s announced package includes a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller, and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. The console is digital: a disc drive is sold separately. If physical-disc playback matters to you, account for the additional drive and check current compatibility and availability before buying.
Who benefits most from PS5 Pro?
The upgrade is most relevant to players who want improved visuals or frame rates and play games that have specific PS5 Pro enhancements. Before deciding, check the enhanced-game support for the titles you actually play, consider whether you need disc playback, and weigh the larger 2TB storage package against the price available in your region. A blanket promise of improvement across the PS5 library would go beyond Sony’s game-specific caveat.
