If you received an Instagram password reset email you didn’t request, don’t click its links. A reset message alone does not prove anyone accessed your account. Open Instagram directly, verify the message in your settings, check login activity and recovery details, and turn on two-factor authentication.
Why did I get a password reset email I didn’t request?
Someone may have entered your username, email address, or phone number into Instagram’s password-reset flow. That can trigger a message without changing your password or signing anyone in. The email itself is not proof of a successful login.
There was also a specific reported wave in January 2026. Which? reported on January 22, 2026 that Instagram said an issue had let an outside party request reset emails for some users. TechRadar reported Meta’s statement that the issue was fixed, Meta’s systems were not breached, and people could disregard those messages. That explanation applies to the reported incident; it does not establish that every unexpected reset email is genuine or harmless.
What should I do first?
- Don’t use links in the unexpected email. Avoid both the password-reset link and any “let us know” or similar link. Meta’s scam guidance recommends avoiding suspicious links and attachments.
- Open Instagram independently. Use the app already installed on your device or type Instagram’s address yourself. Sign in there rather than through the email.
- Check whether Instagram lists the message. Look in settings for Emails from Instagram. Meta identifies this area as the place to find authentic direct communications in the app. The label or navigation may have changed since its July 2021 security guidance, so use the current settings search or help prompts if you cannot find it.
- Review account activity and details. Check recent logins, profile information, and the recovery email address and phone number. If you see an unfamiliar session, log it out and report the unrecognized login.
- Enable two-factor authentication. Meta recommends this added sign-in protection and lists an authenticator app as one available method. Use Instagram’s current security settings to choose an available method.
How can I tell whether my account was accessed?
Check Instagram itself rather than judging from the email alone. Review recent login activity and confirm that your account’s profile and recovery contact details are still yours. An unfamiliar login, changed recovery details, or a password that no longer works warrants prompt action through Instagram’s security and recovery options.

Meta’s 2021 guidance says authentic messages from Instagram appear in the Emails from Instagram tab in settings. The guidance described that tab as the only in-app place for direct and authentic communications from Instagram. Treat the email as unverified until you can confirm it there; do not rely solely on its display name or appearance.
What if I can’t sign in or my recovery details changed?
Start from Instagram’s login-help or account-recovery flow, reached from the app or Instagram’s official website. If possible, regain access to the email address or phone number linked to the account. If you are still signed in, update recovery details that no longer belong to you. Instagram’s exact current recovery steps can depend on your situation, so follow the instructions shown in its official flow.

Avoid third-party “account recovery” offers. Use Instagram’s own security and recovery process rather than giving another service your password, verification code, or account details.

Separate claims about older leaked account data were disputed in the reporting and were not established as the cause of that reset-email wave. The reported figure of 17.5 million account details is not an established count of accounts compromised by the incident and should not be treated as one.
