GitHub made the Copilot Language Server SDK publicly available on February 10, 2025. It gives editor and IDE developers a way to integrate GitHub Copilot using the Language Server Protocol (LSP), with the npm package published as @github/copilot-language-server. It is an integration route for editors—not the separate Copilot SDK for embedding an AI agent runtime in applications.

What the Copilot Language Server SDK does

The SDK lets an editor or IDE connect to GitHub Copilot through LSP, a standard protocol used for communication between development tools and language servers. GitHub described the release as enabling “any editor or IDE” to integrate with Copilot via LSP in its February 10, 2025 announcement.

GitHub named VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Vim/Neovim, and Xcode as editors where Copilot was available at the time of the announcement. The SDK provides another integration path; that list is historical and does not establish a current compatibility matrix or mean that every editor requires this package.

How to get the package

The package is distributed through npm. To add it to a project, run:

npm install @github/copilot-language-server

That is the install command listed on the npm package page. The version number and publication time shown there change as new releases are published; check the package listing for the version available when you install.

What implementation involves

Installing the package is only the first step for an editor developer. The editor must integrate the language server into its LSP workflow and handle the server process and its communication with the editor. The official release repository describes platform-specific binaries distributed as optional packages, as well as a JavaScript distribution that can be invoked with Node.js.

The repository also notes that when using language-server.js, the complete dist directory must be kept. Runtime requirements, platform support, and release artifacts can change, so consult the documentation for the exact release you intend to integrate rather than assuming that an example or binary layout is universal.

How it differs from the GitHub Copilot SDK

Despite the similar names, the Language Server SDK and GitHub’s later Copilot SDK target different integration jobs.

Copilot Language Server SDK Editors and IDEs Connects Copilot through LSP.
GitHub Copilot SDK Applications, services, and developer tools Embeds programmatic access to the Copilot agent runtime.

GitHub announced general availability of the separate Copilot SDK on June 2, 2026. Its language-specific packages and agent-session or authentication features belong to that project, not to the Language Server SDK.

Who should use the Language Server SDK?

  • Consider it if you are building or maintaining an editor or IDE and want to integrate Copilot using LSP.
  • Look at the separate Copilot SDK if you want to embed Copilot’s agent runtime in an application, service, or developer tool.
  • Check the current package documentation before committing to a platform, runtime, or release-specific implementation. The cited materials do not establish a complete compatibility matrix or full protocol/API surface.
