You can make a real optical hologram at home, but it takes more than a phone and a plastic pyramid: you need a compatible laser and photosensitive plate, careful plate processing, and a setup that stays still during exposure. If you want a quick visual effect instead, Pepper’s Ghost is much simpler—but it is a reflection illusion, not a recorded hologram.
Choose between a recorded hologram and a hologram-like illusion
A genuine optical hologram records an interference pattern formed when laser light interacts with light reflected from an object. When illuminated as intended, the recorded pattern reconstructs light that gives the viewer a three-dimensional impression. MIT OpenCourseWare’s holographic imaging overview covers the underlying interference and diffraction concepts.
A clear plastic pyramid over a phone does not record that pattern. It uses reflected screen imagery to create a Pepper’s Ghost effect. The Museum of Science’s September 15, 2023 demonstration describes using a screen, dark-background video, and clear plastic or glass to make a reflected image appear to float. It is a useful display trick, but not holography.

What you need for a real reflection hologram
- Compatible recording plates: The plate must match the laser and processing method you plan to use.
- A suitable stabilized laser: Many ordinary laser pointers are not suitable. Holography generally needs a stabilized, single-mode laser with adequate coherence. Check the requirements for your particular plate and kit instead of assuming a pointer will work.
- Processing materials and instructions: Use the chemicals and steps specified for the plate. Follow the product’s handling and disposal notices.
- A dark workspace and stable surface: The work area needs to stay dark enough for safe plate handling and steady enough to avoid disturbing the exposure.
- A small, bright, rigid object: A coin is a more practical beginner subject than fabric or anything that moves or deforms.

How to make a real reflection hologram
The following is a high-level workflow, not a substitute for the current instructions supplied with your plate and processing materials. Integraf’s instructions specify requirements for its products; their numerical laser specifications are not universal requirements for all holography materials.
- Prepare the workspace. Choose a dark area with a sturdy, stable table. Clear the exposure area and reduce vibration, drafts, and other disturbances. Follow the recording-material instructions for appropriate darkroom lighting.
- Choose and position the subject. Start with a small, bright, rigid object such as a coin. Place it in contact with or close to the plate only as directed by the method you are using; do not assume that every hologram design uses contact recording.
- Check laser and plate compatibility. For its PFG-03M and PFG-01 materials, Integraf’s instructions, revised January 26, 2015, specify red wavelengths between 632 and 670 nm, a single-mode stabilized frequency, and recommended coherence of at least 30 cm. Treat these as specifications for those materials and instructions—not as a general formula for every plate. Confirm current compatibility before exposing a plate.
- Arrange the laser and plate as directed. Follow the kit’s setup instructions and leave the arrangement untouched during exposure. Integraf’s guide warns that movement greater than one micrometre can ruin an exposure; that is vendor guidance for its method, not a universal measured threshold. The practical point is that small vibration or movement can spoil the interference pattern.
- Process the plate using its exact procedure. Follow the supplied timing, chemical-handling, and disposal directions. Do not substitute a generic processing recipe or improvise chemical disposal.
- Illuminate the finished plate as instructed. Follow the recording material’s guidance for viewing illumination. The result’s visibility depends on suitable viewing conditions.
Integraf’s contact-copy option
Integraf describes a simpler contact-copy arrangement in which the plate sits directly against the object. Its guide says this can avoid separate vibration isolation when there is no relative movement between plate and object. This is a vendor-described option for that setup, not a rule that applies to every hologram.

Make the simpler Pepper’s Ghost display
If your goal is a quick visual demonstration rather than a recorded optical image, use the Museum of Science’s Pepper’s Ghost approach. A screen plays a video with a dark background, and a clear plastic or glass surface reflects part of the image toward the viewer. In a dim setting, the reflection stands out while the background remains visible.

Safety and practical limits
Read and follow the laser and chemical safety notices supplied with your specific products before beginning. Integraf recommends adult supervision and reasonable care in the context of its intended use. Do not look into a laser beam, and do not improvise handling or disposal procedures for processing chemicals.
Laboratory rules are not automatically home protocols. For example, the University of California, Berkeley’s Advanced Lab holography page describes institution-specific controls including goggles, controlled room access, and staff review before a first exposure. Follow the requirements that apply to your setting and the current notices for your equipment.
