You can use it on Desktop or on a Server that has a graphical session, but it cannot display a window on a headless machine accessed only through a text terminal.
Can you use gedit on Ubuntu Server?
First check whether your server has a graphical desktop session. If it does, gedit can open in that session. If you administer the machine through SSH using only a text terminal, installing gedit will not create a display or make an editor window appear. For text-only access, use a terminal editor such as nano or vi.
To display gedit from a remote server, you need a graphical session or a separately configured remote-display arrangement. The steps depend on your setup; there is no single remote-display configuration that applies to every Ubuntu Server.
Install gedit on Ubuntu 24.04
Ubuntu’s Noble package listing identifies gedit version 46.2-2 in the Universe component. The package depends on GTK graphical-interface libraries, so the editor needs a working graphical environment to show its window. See the Ubuntu 24.04 gedit package listing.

Refresh the package information:
sudo apt update -
Install gedit:
sudo apt install gedit -
When prompted, review the packages APT plans to install and confirm to continue.
Ubuntu’s Server documentation describes APT as its command-line package tool. On Ubuntu Desktop, you can also install applications through App Center; Ubuntu notes that applications there may be provided as snap or Debian packages. The APT commands above are a direct option for either Desktop or Server installations.

Open gedit and edit a file
On Desktop, search for gedit in Applications, or open a terminal and run:
geditTo open a file from the terminal, supply its name or path:

gedit notes.txt
gedit /path/to/config.confYou can pass multiple filenames to open multiple documents. The Ubuntu help page notes that an unrecognized filename can open as a new blank document under that name. For Noble, the documented command form is gedit [OPTION...] [FILE...] [+LINE[:COLUMN]]; the final argument form lets you request a file position, such as a particular line or column. Refer to the Ubuntu Noble gedit manpage for the available options.
Type in the editor and save with the Save action or Ctrl+S. Use Save As when you want a different filename or location. gedit edits ordinary text files; it is not a substitute for a shell editor when you have no graphical session.

Useful gedit features
- UTF-8 compatibility: gedit can work with UTF-8 text.
- Syntax highlighting: Visual formatting can make programming-language and markup syntax easier to scan.
- Spell checking: Useful for prose and notes.
- Plugins: Optional extensions can add capabilities. Basic editing does not require them; Ubuntu’s package record lists
gedit-pluginsas a suggested package, which you can check in the Ubuntu package archive.
The Ubuntu Community Help Wiki also discusses backup-copy and autosave preferences, but that page was last edited in 2017. Treat those as options to look for rather than relying on a specific menu path being current: Ubuntu Community Help Wiki: gedit.
Editing protected configuration files
Open and save files in your own account normally. For a system-owned configuration file, use an administrative editing method documented for the Ubuntu desktop and workflow you have installed. Avoid assuming that sudo gedit is the right default: elevated graphical apps can behave differently across desktop environments and may create file-ownership or security problems.
