Yes. Shutting down your PC every night is safe. The U.S. Department of Energy says using sleep and off modes will not shorten a computer’s life, and recommends turning computers off during long periods when they are not in use to save energy. Choose sleep instead when you want to resume quickly or need the computer available for overnight work.

Does shutting down every night damage a PC?

No. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program states that “using sleep and off modes will not shorten computer life.” Its guidance also recommends shutting computers off completely at night and during other long periods of non-use. This is official qualitative guidance, not a promise about the lifespan of every individual component or system.

There is no universal lifespan figure or energy-savings amount to apply to every PC. Actual power use depends on the computer and how long it spends in each state; estimating cost also requires your local electricity rate.

Shutdown, sleep, hibernate, and idle: what changes?

Mode What happens Best fit
On or idle The computer remains in its working state, even if the display is off. It can continue running processes and using power. Tasks that need the PC to remain active.
Sleep The computer enters a low-power state designed for quick resumption. Supported systems may wake for configured events; sleep does not mean every component is completely without power. Short breaks or when a quick return matters.
Hibernate On systems that offer it, the computer saves open programs and files, then powers down. Startup restores the previous state. When you want to preserve your session while powering down.
Shutdown or off The active user session ends. Returning requires starting the operating system again. Overnight or other extended periods when the PC is not needed.

Sleep behavior varies by device and configuration. Windows systems may use traditional sleep states or Modern Standby, which can remain partially active on supported computers. Do not assume that every PC handles sleep or wake events identically.

Which mode should you use overnight?

  • Shut down if you will not need the PC and it has no overnight task to complete. This is the straightforward energy-saving choice for extended non-use.
  • Use sleep if returning quickly is more important than ending the session, or if a configured wake event is needed.
  • Use hibernate if your system supports it and you want to save your session while powering down.
  • Leave it on only when a task or availability requirement calls for it.

Check for backups and scheduled tasks first

A backup or other scheduled job may need the computer to stay on. Check when the task runs and whether your PC’s power settings support waking it from sleep. If the computer must remain on, the Department of Energy suggests turning off the monitor and considering timed shutdown or a shutdown option that runs after the backup completes.

What ENERGY STAR’s power-management criteria mean

ENERGY STAR’s computer criteria cover efficient operation in Off, Sleep, and Idle modes and require power management. Its computer guidance lists a specification effective date of October 2025, with criteria for display sleep within 15 minutes and system sleep within 30 minutes of user inactivity. These are certification requirements—not an estimate of how much energy or money shutting down will save on your particular PC.
