CoreXY is a two-motor motion system used in some 3D printers to move the toolhead across the X and Y axes through a coordinated belt arrangement. The motors typically remain fixed to the frame, while their combined movement positions the toolhead. CoreXY describes that XY mechanism—not a printer model, filament, or slicer.
What is CoreXY?
CoreXY is a belt-driven kinematic arrangement: two motors work together to move a carriage in two horizontal directions. Its defining feature is the coupled belt path and motor motion, not whether the printer’s bed moves. A printer can use CoreXY, but the term does not describe the entire machine.
In a typical implementation, both XY motors are mounted to the frame rather than carried by a moving axis. That can reduce the mass the machine has to accelerate, one reason CoreXY is used in printers designed for higher acceleration. It does not guarantee a particular print speed or quality; those depend on the complete printer and its setup.
How does CoreXY work?
The two belts constrain the carriage, and the controller coordinates both motors to create the requested X/Y movement. Each motor contributes to both coordinates. A pure X or Y move therefore requires a combination of motor movements; a diagonal move uses a different combination.

One compact way to express the mapping is Klipper’s convention: A = X + Y and B = X - Y, with Z independent. These equations describe motor positions relative to Cartesian positions; the physical directions depend on the belt routing and coordinate conventions used by a particular printer. See Klipper’s kinematics documentation.
In the common schematic convention below, the two stationary motors are shown at the rear. Equal motor-direction changes produce one axis of motion; opposite changes produce the other. The labels are schematic rather than universal: a different routing or coordinate convention can reverse the named directions.

Schematic motion convention:
motors change in the same direction → one XY axis
motors change in opposite directions → the other XY axis
The exact pulley positions and belt crossings vary between machines. The CoreXY mechanism reference explains the principle and shows how pulley placement can move a belt crossover out of the working area. Use the printer maker’s diagram when identifying a real machine’s belts or interpreting motor directions.
Is a CoreXY printer faster?
Not necessarily. Keeping the XY motors on the frame can make the moving assembly lighter than in designs that carry a motor along a moving axis. Lower moving mass can help a machine reach higher acceleration, but it is only one part of performance. The frame, belts, toolhead, motion control, tuning, and print settings also matter.

Prusa describes CoreXY as having lighter X and Y axes and notes that this can help avoid artifacts that may appear on faster Cartesian prints. Treat that as a design tendency, not a promise about every CoreXY printer or a guarantee of better prints. The RepRap CoreXY reference also describes the architecture; broad performance claims should be judged against the specific machine.

| Consideration | CoreXY | Cartesian |
|---|---|---|
| XY movement | Two motors coordinate through a coupled belt path. | Axis movements are more directly assigned to motors. |
| Moving mass | Motors can remain fixed to the frame, allowing a lighter moving XY assembly. | Some designs carry an axis motor with another moving axis. |
| Space use | The bed need not travel sideways, which can improve build-volume-to-footprint use. | Sideways bed movement can increase the footprint relative to the build area. |
| Maintenance | Longer, more involved belt routing can make inspection and repair harder. | Prusa notes that parts and advice are easy to find because the design is common. |
| Setup sensitivity | Frame stability, squareness, and correct belt routing and tension matter. | Requirements depend on the specific printer design. |
These tradeoffs are summarized in Prusa’s overview of printer architectures. Choose by the workload and machine you need, rather than assuming either architecture is universally better.

CoreXY belt routes differ by printer. For example, the Promega belt-routing guide describes one implementation with upper and lower loops routed around bearings and back to the carriage. Its directions apply to that design, not to every CoreXY machine.

- Follow the printer manufacturer’s routing, tensioning, and squaring procedure.
- Check the exact belt dimensions specified for your printer before ordering a replacement timing belt.
- Do not assume a universal belt width, pitch, length, or tension value; the cited references do not establish one.
Prusa notes that longer belts and a more complicated route can make belt problems harder to repair. The frame also needs to be stable and square for reliable movement and dimensional accuracy.
Examples of printers that use CoreXY
Prusa’s architecture overview lists the CORE One, CORE One L, and Original Prusa XL as CoreXY printers. Its CORE One+ product page describes that model’s implementation as two fixed motors pulling on a continuous belt loop to move the toolhead. These are examples, not a complete list; product details and availability can change.
