Eigen Labs announced on February 22, 2024, that it raised $100 million from a16z crypto. Eigen Labs is the core development team contributing to EigenLayer and EigenDA; EigenLayer itself is the Ethereum restaking protocol, not the company that announced the financing.
What was announced?
Eigen Labs described the financing in its February 22, 2024 announcement: “To further empower this mission we are excited to announce that Eigen Labs, the core development team contributing to EigenLayer and EigenDA, has raised $100 million from a16z crypto.”
The announcement did not disclose a valuation, financing terms, or a specific use of the proceeds. It presented the raise in the context of the team’s work on EigenLayer and EigenDA, so it does not establish that every proposed service or application was already available.
How EigenLayer, Eigen Labs, and EigenDA differ
- EigenLayer is a protocol on Ethereum that enables restaking.
- Eigen Labs is the company and core development team contributing to EigenLayer and EigenDA. It is the entity that announced the raise.
- EigenDA is a data-availability service being developed in the EigenLayer ecosystem. Eigen Labs’ April 2024 launch account identified it as an actively validated service (AVS) at launch and described it as being in beta at that time.
What restaking does
In a conventional Ethereum staking arrangement, staked ETH helps secure Ethereum. EigenLayer’s model allows stakers to make that stake available to support additional services. In its April 9, 2024 mainnet announcement, Eigen Labs described restakers delegating stake to operators. Operators could opt into running actively validated services, or AVSs, which use the restaked stake as part of their security model.

The arrangement links three roles: a restaker makes stake available, an operator runs infrastructure, and an AVS is the service being supported. The exact service, operator, assets involved, and applicable protocol rules matter; this description of the launch model is not a current assessment of terms or risks.
What applications did the announcement point to?
Eigen Labs’ funding announcement discussed areas developers were exploring for decentralized infrastructure, including cross-chain messaging, transaction ordering, off-chain data access, AI inference, fully homomorphic encryption, secret sharing, and secure hardware enclave networks. These were presented as potential areas of development, not as proof that each had launched or was generally available.

EigenDA provides a concrete example of the ecosystem’s direction. The April 2024 mainnet account named it as an AVS and said it was in beta then. That dated description should not be read as a statement about its present availability or status.
Who is Sreeram Kannan?
Sreeram Kannan founded Eigen Labs. The company’s announcement says he previously taught at the University of Washington and led the UW Blockchain Lab; contemporaneous GeekWire coverage also described him as the company’s founder and a former UW professor.

What the 2024 launch details do—and do not—tell you
Eigen Labs’ April 2024 mainnet announcement said that launch did not include in-protocol AVS payments or slashing. That is a statement about the launch at that time, not evidence of EigenLayer’s rules in 2026. Likewise, the financing announcement does not establish the current number of operators, the amount of ETH restaked, or current risk conditions.
Token details are separate from the financing. Eigen Foundation documentation states that EIGEN became transferable on September 30, 2024. That later date does not change who raised the $100 million or make the token the subject of the funding announcement.
