1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor most laptops, the simplest way to connect two HDMI monitors is to plug both into a compatible dual-output dock, then connect the dock to a laptop port that supports its video technology. Set the displays to Extend in your operating system so each screen has its own desktop. First check your laptop’s exact model and port capabilities: two HDMI sockets on a dock do not guarantee two independent screens.
Check whether your laptop supports two external displays
Before choosing a dock or buying cables, find your laptop’s exact model and check its manufacturer specifications. Confirm the maximum number of external displays, supported resolution and refresh rate, and which ports can carry video. The number of screens your setup can run depends on the laptop and graphics hardware as well as the dock. Apple’s Mac display guidance also notes that supported display count depends on model, resolution and refresh rate.
- USB-C is not a guarantee of video. A USB-C port may support data or charging without supporting video. For a native USB-C dock, check for DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4 or Thunderbolt support as required. Microsoft explains that the PC port, cable and connected device must support compatible USB-C features in its USB-C troubleshooting guidance.
- Check the dock’s display method. A USB-C MST dock, Thunderbolt dock and DisplayLink dock work differently. The laptop and operating system must support the dock’s method.
- Check the complete video path. The laptop, dock, adapters, cables and monitors must support the resolution and refresh rate you want.
Choose a connection method that fits your laptop
| Connection method | What your setup needs | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode dock with MST | A USB-C port that carries DisplayPort video, graphics hardware with capacity for both displays, and a dock supporting the required monitor modes. | Plugable says macOS does not support multiple independent extended displays from a single MST connection. Check its MST compatibility guidance. |
| Thunderbolt dock | A laptop and dock with compatible Thunderbolt support, plus a laptop display limit that allows two external screens. | Check the specifications for your exact Mac or PC model; a Thunderbolt port alone does not override the laptop’s display limit. |
| DisplayLink dock | A dock that supports your operating system and any required DisplayLink software or drivers. | DisplayLink is a distinct USB graphics method, not a feature of every USB dock. Belkin documents its INC002 dock as supporting up to two external 1080p displays over USB-C; consult its INC002 user guide for that model’s details. |
| Separate video connections | Two suitable video outputs on the laptop, or one direct connection and one compatible dock or adapter output. | The laptop’s total display limit still applies. |
If you need to buy a dock, look for a dual HDMI USB-C dock only after confirming it matches your laptop’s port, operating system and display limit. A dock’s two HDMI outputs describe its connectors, not a guarantee that every laptop can drive two independent screens through it.
Connect both HDMI monitors and extend the desktop
- Match the ports. Check that the laptop supports the dock’s video method and that each monitor has an HDMI input. If a connector does not match, choose a compatible video adapter or cable based on supported video features—not connector shape alone.
- Connect the screens. Plug each monitor’s HDMI cable into a separate HDMI output on the dock. Connect the dock to the laptop’s appropriate USB-C or Thunderbolt port. Connect monitor and dock power if required.
- Choose Extend in Windows. Open Settings > System > Display, select the multiple-display option, then choose Extend these displays. Drag the display tiles to match the monitors’ physical positions. DisplayLink’s Windows configuration instructions cover extending and arranging DisplayLink screens.
- Arrange displays on a Mac. Open System Settings > Displays to arrange screens and set resolution or refresh rate. Follow Apple’s Mac display instructions for your model.
- Confirm they are independent. Move a window from one screen to the other. If both screens show the same image, check for mirror or duplicate mode; if the operating system is already set to extend, the laptop and dock may not support two independent displays together.
Mac-specific display limits
Do not assume an MST dock will extend two independent screens from a Mac: Plugable states that macOS does not support multiple independent extended displays from a single MST connection. Check the display limit for your exact Mac model before selecting a Thunderbolt dock, separate display connections or DisplayLink dock.

Apple’s dual-display instructions for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with M3 chips describe a specific setup: MacBook Air requires macOS Sonoma 14.3 or later, and MacBook Pro requires macOS Sonoma 14.6 or later. The setup also requires an external keyboard and mouse or trackpad, and power; the two displays are connected with the laptop lid closed. Opening the lid can make the secondary display go dark or disconnect. These instructions are specific to that M3 setup, not a general rule for all Macs. See Apple’s M3 dual-monitor instructions.
Troubleshoot a two-monitor connection
Neither monitor shows a picture
- Check that the laptop port supports the dock’s video method. Try the port identified in the laptop specifications for DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt.
- Check that the dock, cable and any adapter support the required feature and video mode.
- Confirm that the dock and monitors have power. Microsoft lists incompatible PC, cable or port capabilities among causes of USB-C display problems in its USB-C troubleshooting guidance.
Only one monitor works
Check the laptop’s maximum external-display count and the dock’s display technology. An MST hub cannot increase the graphics hardware’s display limit. On a Mac using one MST connection, two screens may not extend independently.

Both monitors show the same image
Change the system’s display mode from duplicate or mirror to extend. If it is already set to extend, verify that the dock and laptop support two independent displays together.
A monitor daisy-chain does not work
HDMI does not daisy-chain monitors. Connect each HDMI display to a separate video output. Supported chains can use DisplayPort MST, USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt, but require compatible displays and host support; see Dell’s monitor daisy-chain guidance.
