If your iPhone or iPad screen keeps dimming, first check whether the brightness slider moves, whether Low Power Mode is on, and whether the device feels warm. Auto-Brightness, battery-saving behavior, heat, and a few display settings can all change how bright the screen looks; dimming alone does not mean the display is broken.
Why does an iPhone or iPad screen dim on its own?
- Auto-Brightness adjusts screen brightness in response to ambient light. Apple says it lowers brightness in dark surroundings and raises it in brighter ones. When enabled, the brightness slider can move as lighting changes. Apple’s brightness and color-temperature guide explains the setting.
- Low Power Mode reduces display brightness as part of its battery-saving behavior. It also changes Auto-Lock to 30 seconds. On iPhone 15 and later, find the controls at Settings > Battery > Power Mode; on iPhone 14 and earlier, go to Settings > Battery. A yellow battery icon indicates that Low Power Mode is active. - Heat can cause the device to lower maximum brightness until it cools. If its internal temperature exceeds the normal operating range, the display may dim or go black. Apple describes this behavior in its guide to iPhone and iPad temperature conditions.
- Reduce White Point lowers the intensity of bright colors, so a screen can look subdued even if its brightness slider is high. Find it under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. Details are in Apple’s display and text-size guide.
- Attention Aware on supported Face ID iPhone and iPad Pro models can keep the display from dimming while you are looking at it. This affects when the screen dims, rather than serving as a general brightness control. See Apple’s Attention Aware guide.
- Always-On display on supported iPhones intentionally shows a dimmed Lock Screen. It can turn fully dark in situations such as when the phone is face down or in a pocket. This is expected behavior, not the same as the active screen unexpectedly dimming. Apple lists the behavior in its Always-On display guide.
- Auto-Lock is relevant if the display dims and then turns off after inactivity. Its setting is at Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. Apple explains how to keep the iPhone display on longer.
How to find the cause and fix it
- Watch the brightness slider. Open Control Center and raise the brightness. On iPhone X or later and iPads running iOS 12 or iPadOS, swipe down from the top-right corner. On iPhone 8 and earlier, swipe up from the bottom edge. If the slider moves as room lighting changes, Auto-Brightness is a likely cause.
- Test Auto-Brightness. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness. If it seems to adapt incorrectly, turn it off and then back on; this is Apple’s recommended troubleshooting step. Turning it off can increase power use, so treat this as a diagnostic test rather than a battery-saving fix.
- Check Low Power Mode. Look for the yellow battery icon, then review Settings > Battery. On iPhone 15 and later, open Battery > Power Mode. If the mode is on, its reduced brightness and 30-second Auto-Lock interval may explain what you are seeing.
- Inspect Reduce White Point. If the brightness slider is high but bright colors still look muted, open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and check Reduce White Point.
- Consider heat and what the device was doing. If dimming occurs while charging or during demanding use and the device feels warm, stop the activity and let it cool. Thermal dimming is protective behavior; do not try to override it.
- Check for model-specific screen behavior. If the dimming occurs on the Lock Screen, determine whether your iPhone supports Always-On display and whether the screen is face down or covered. On supported Face ID iPhone and iPad Pro models, Attention Aware can affect dimming while you are looking at the display.
- Check Auto-Lock if the screen goes off after inactivity. Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and review the interval. Extending it can increase power use; Low Power Mode sets the interval to 30 seconds.
Settings that can look like automatic dimming

When should you contact Apple Support?
If the dimming continues while the device is at a normal temperature and you have checked the relevant settings, contact Apple Support or a qualified service provider. The symptoms alone do not establish which component, if any, needs repair.
