To change how one folder is arranged, open it in File Explorer, choose a layout from View, then select a sort criterion such as Name or Date modified. To carry a preferred view to similar folders, use Apply to Folders in Folder Options; that broader setting is described in Microsoft-hosted community guidance, not a Microsoft product specification.
Change the view and sort order in the current folder

Open the folder you want to change in File Explorer.

Select View, then choose a layout that suits the contents, such as Details, List, or an icon layout. The View controls determine how items appear. Microsoft’s File Explorer guide covers these display options.

For a Details layout, select the sorting criterion you want, such as Name or Date modified. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance documents selecting a criterion in Details view; pressing Enter activates the selected criterion when using keyboard navigation. Changing the layout and choosing what to sort by are separate choices: the layout controls presentation, while the criterion determines the basis for ordering. If the result is not what you expect, confirm that you opened the intended folder and selected the intended criterion. The cited Microsoft instructions explain criterion selection, but do not establish every sort-direction control or behavior across Windows 11 builds.

The response describes the setting as applying to folders of the same type, and notes that different folder types may need separate treatment. Read the Microsoft-hosted Q&A answer. This is practical community guidance, not a guarantee that one setting will change every folder, special location, or Windows 11 configuration. The available Microsoft support documentation does not specify all of those exceptions or confirm exactly how sort orders propagate on current builds.

Similar folders: Try Apply to Folders after setting up an example folder, keeping in mind that its documented scope comes from an independent-advisor answer and may not cover every folder type or location.
These procedures use built-in File Explorer controls and do not require a separate utility or purchase. Microsoft’s English-language File Explorer support page covers Windows 11 and Windows 10; the accessibility page describes sorting criteria in Details view.
