No—you cannot upload a complete custom Minecraft: Java Edition modpack archive to an Aternos server. You can install a pack that Aternos supports, suggest a missing pack for review, or use hosting with full file access, such as exaroton, which Aternos identifies as its paid alternative for custom uploads.
What you can do on Aternos
Aternos does not provide full file-upload capabilities or FTP access for installing custom mods and modpacks. Its file-upload and FTP guidance explains that restriction. It does not mean every kind of upload is forbidden: Aternos lists other supported file types, including datapacks, resource packs, Bedrock add-ons, WorldEdit schematics, and certain configuration files.
Aternos cites two reasons for restricting custom mod and plugin uploads: unrestricted file access could let users evade the automatic shutdown system that supports its free hosting model, and custom mods or plugins could contain malicious code.
Choose the option that fits your pack
| What you need | What to do | Limit to know |
|---|---|---|
| The exact pack is in Aternos’s catalog | Select it in the server’s software section, then install the matching pack on each player’s computer. See Aternos’s modpack installation guide; there are also guides for CurseForge packs and Modrinth packs. | Only one modpack can be used at a time. You cannot add individual mods or configurations on top of an installed pack; players need the same pack and version. |
| The pack is missing | Submit it through Aternos’s suggestion process. | Meeting the requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Review may take days or weeks. |
| You want a selection of individual mods, not a complete pack archive | Choose a supported mod loader—Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt—and install available mods through the catalog. Follow Aternos’s mod installation guide. | Not every mod may be available. Match the loader and mod versions on the server and each client. |
| You need to upload the complete custom pack | Consider exaroton, which Aternos names as its paid hosting alternative with full file access. | Check current pricing and service details before choosing. |
How to request a missing modpack
Aternos reviews suggestions against its requirements. Before submitting, check that the project:
Recommended Free Tools
- Is hosted on a site Aternos supports.
- Has sufficient popularity and ongoing development.
- Is free.
- Includes server files, not only files intended for a player’s computer.
Aternos says review can take a few days or weeks; it does not promise a decision by a particular date. Eligibility is not a guarantee that the pack will be added.
Why a server pack and client pack must match
A modpack is more than a list of mods: its loader, versions, and configuration need to align between the server and the players connecting to it. For a catalog pack, install the matching pack on each player’s computer and use the version supported by the server. For individual mods, make sure the client uses the corresponding loader and mod versions. Aternos does not let you alter an installed pack by layering your own mods or configurations over it.
