You can share some purchased apps and subscriptions with family, but there is no universal family library: Apple, Google Play, and Microsoft each have separate rules. Check which account or store owns the purchase, confirm that the specific app or plan is eligible, and then enable sharing through that platform’s family settings. Keep using your own account; the supported methods do not require sharing a password.
Choose the sharing system that owns the purchase
Start with the account or store through which the app or subscription was bought. Apple uses Family Sharing and Purchase Sharing; Google Play uses Family Library; Microsoft 365 sharing applies only to certain plans. A family group on one platform does not unlock purchases made on another.

Share Apple apps, purchases, and subscriptions
Apple Family Sharing lets each member keep their own Apple Account while an organizer invites them to a family group. Apple says a group can contain the organizer and up to five other family members. Some services share automatically; others, including iCloud+, require separate setup. Apple’s Family Sharing guide
Share an eligible App Store purchase
- Set up Family Sharing and invite family members using their Apple Accounts.
- Enable Purchase Sharing and the relevant “Share My Purchases” settings.
- On the App Store page for an app, check the Supports section for Family Sharing eligibility. Eligible purchases can then appear in a family member’s Purchased area.
Not every app supports Family Sharing. Apple also excludes certain items, including purchases a family member has hidden, consumable in-app items such as coins or gems, and subscriptions or in-app purchases that are not billed by Apple. Availability and participation can vary by country and app. Apple’s content-sharing guidance

Share an Apple subscription
- Open Settings and tap your name to open your Apple Account.
- Tap Subscriptions and select the subscription.
- Look for “Share with Family.” If it appears, select it to enable sharing.
The option is subscription-specific: its absence means you cannot enable sharing using this control. Apple identifies individual Apple Music and Apple One subscriptions and student subscriptions among the exclusions; some subscriptions require separate setup. Apple Support
Share eligible Google Play purchases with Family Library
Google Play Family Library can share eligible purchased apps, games, movies, TV shows, e-books, and audiobooks with up to five family members. Eligible categories and availability can vary by country. Members need Google Accounts, must live in the same country as the family manager, and cannot already belong to another Google family group. The manager must meet Google’s age and payment requirements, and a valid family payment method must be on file. Google Play Help

Turn on sharing for an app or game
- Open Google Play and go to the purchased app or game’s details page.
- Check whether the item is eligible for Family Library.
- Turn on Family Library for that item. Depending on the purchase and settings, eligible items may be added automatically or manually.
Apps and games downloaded at no charge and in-app purchases cannot be shared through Family Library. Movies and TV shows acquired after joining have additional payment-method requirements, so check Google Play’s current rules for the item and country before changing payment settings. - Invite the person to join your Microsoft family group, if they are not already a member.
- After they join, open the subscription sharing controls in the owner’s Microsoft account.
- Share the subscription with the family-group member.
If the owner stops sharing, the recipient loses subscription benefits, including extra OneDrive storage and use of desktop apps, but is not automatically removed from the family group. The billing route depends on where the subscription was purchased: a direct Microsoft purchase is managed through the Microsoft account, while an app-store or retailer purchase is managed through that seller. - Confirm the exact item. A platform’s family feature does not mean every app, subscription, or purchase qualifies. Check the item’s current listing or subscription settings.
- Check purchase channel and region. Rules may differ by country, plan, and seller. For subscriptions billed outside Apple or Microsoft, sharing or billing controls may not be available in that platform’s settings.
- Understand what removal does. Google says family members lose access when contributed content is removed from Family Library or when a member leaves. Microsoft 365 recipients lose subscription benefits if sharing ends. Before reorganizing a group, check what access depends on that member or purchase.
- Use family groups, not shared passwords. Apple, Google, and Microsoft’s supported options are designed around family membership and individual accounts.
These platform rules do not cover every app or subscription provider. Developers and subscription providers decide whether their offers participate, and eligibility can change; verify the specific item’s current support information before relying on shared access.
