Yes—you can unit test a static method in C# by calling it directly through its type and asserting its result or other observable behavior. The difficulty is not that the method is static; it is when the code depends on hidden, uncontrolled state such as DateTime.Now. In that case, pass the value in or introduce a dependency seam so a test can control it.

Call a pure static method directly

A static member is accessed through its type rather than an instance. A static class cannot be instantiated, and a static method cannot use instance fields unless the relevant state is supplied to it. If the method’s behavior depends on explicit arguments, invoke it like any other production method and assert its contract.

[Fact]
public void Normalize_WhitespaceInput_ReturnsEmptyString()
{
    // Arrange
    var input = "   ";

    // Act
    var actual = TextRules.Normalize(input);

    // Assert
    Assert.Equal(string.Empty, actual);
}

This is an illustrative xUnit-style example; the key idea is the direct call to TextRules.Normalize, not a special static-method test attribute. Build cases from the method’s documented behavior: ordinary inputs, boundaries, relevant invalid inputs or exceptions, and meaningful edge cases. Do not invent requirements the method does not promise.

For a concise, maintainable test, use Arrange, Act, Assert, give the test a name that describes the method, scenario, and expected behavior, and keep it focused on one action. Microsoft Learn’s guidance describes good unit tests as fast, isolated, repeatable, self-checking, and timely. It also cautions that a high coverage percentage alone does not establish test quality. Make static dependencies controllable

A static method that reads the clock, environment, or another dependency directly is harder to test predictably. A test cannot choose what a direct call to DateTime.Now returns. Instead, expose the needed value or dependency at a boundary the test can control. Microsoft’s example uses an IDateTimeProvider to supply the day of the week; a test can provide a stub that returns a chosen day and exercise the relevant branches. The benefit comes from controlling the dependency, not from using a particular mocking library. See Microsoft’s unit-testing best practices.

Pass in the value when that is enough

If the method’s decision depends on a value such as a date, accepting that value as an argument can be the simplest seam. The caller obtains the current date; the method under test receives a predictable value. This keeps the decision logic straightforward to test.

Use an interface when the dependency is a service

If the code needs a clock or another service, have it depend on an interface or equivalent abstraction and supply a test implementation. This is a design change that makes the dependency explicit. An ordinary interface-based mock does not automatically intercept an arbitrary static call already embedded in existing code; the code must be routed through the seam.

Choose the test approach that fits the code

Situation Preferred approach Trade-off
Pure static method with explicit inputs Call it directly and assert its behavior Simple and direct; assertions should target observable behavior rather than hidden internals.
Static method reads time or other environmental state Pass in the value or add a dependency seam Requires a small design change, but gives tests control and repeatability.
Private static helper Exercise it through public behavior in most cases Avoids coupling tests to implementation details; reflection is an option for a specific reason.

Prefer public behavior over private helpers

Tests are usually more durable when they exercise a public method and verify the behavior callers can observe. A private helper may change or disappear as the implementation evolves, even when the public contract remains the same. Microsoft recommends considering tests through public interfaces for maintainability. If there is a concrete reason to test a private static method directly, MSTest documents PrivateType, a reflection wrapper for private members; treat that as a framework-specific option, not the default testing strategy. MSTest-specific method requirements

The following rules apply to MSTest, not automatically to xUnit, NUnit, or every C# test runner. Microsoft’s MSTest documentation, last updated September 3, 2026, says each test class uses [TestClass] and each test method uses [TestMethod]. A test method must be public, an instance method, and return void, Task, or ValueTask; ValueTask support is documented from MSTest v3.3. Test methods are parameterless unless a data-driven attribute is used. A test also needs assertions to report whether the behavior is correct.

For example, an MSTest test is an instance method even when it calls a static production method:

Understand what “static” changes

Static describes how a member is accessed: through the type rather than an object instance. It does not prevent calling or testing the method. Static classes cannot be instantiated, and static members do not operate on per-instance fields; any needed state must be supplied through arguments or other explicit dependencies. For details, see Microsoft Learn: Static Classes and Static Class Members – C#.
