First, check whether you mean the number row above the letters or the separate numeric keypad; they can fail for different reasons. Test the affected keys in a simple text field and in another app. If the keys work everywhere except one app, check that app’s input field and settings before changing Windows. You can use the On-Screen Keyboard while troubleshooting.
1. Identify which number keys are failing
Test the top number row and the numeric keypad separately in a simple text field, such as a new Notepad document. Note whether every key in a group fails or only particular keys, and whether the issue occurs in more than one application. This helps distinguish an app-specific problem from a Windows or keyboard issue.
For a temporary workaround, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn on On-Screen Keyboard, or press Windows logo key + Ctrl + O. To show a numeric keypad on the On-Screen Keyboard, select Options and enable the numeric-keypad setting. Microsoft documents these options in its On-Screen Keyboard instructions.
2. If the numeric keypad is affected, check Num Lock and Mouse Keys
Toggle Num Lock
Press Num Lock once and test the keypad again. If your keyboard has an indicator light, watch whether it changes. Windows can play a sound when Num Lock changes if Toggle Keys is enabled under Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard; this can help confirm that the key registered.

Turn off Mouse Keys if keypad presses move the pointer
Mouse Keys uses the numeric keypad to move the pointer. If pressing keypad digits moves the pointer instead of entering numbers, open Settings > Accessibility > Mouse and turn off Mouse Keys. Microsoft describes the setting and its keypad behavior in its Mouse Keys guidance.
3. Review keyboard accessibility settings
Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and check Filter Keys. Microsoft says Filter Keys can adjust keyboard sensitivity so brief or repeated keystrokes are ignored. If it was enabled unintentionally, compare the keys’ behavior with it turned off.

Sticky Keys is designed to make multi-key shortcuts easier to press; it is not the primary explanation for number keys failing on their own. Keep accessibility features enabled if you rely on them, and change a setting only to compare behavior.
4. Check the keyboard’s connection and power
For a USB keyboard
- Unplug the keyboard and reconnect it.
- Try a different USB port. If it is connected through a hub, connect it directly to the PC.
- Look for cable damage or debris that could block a key.
For a wireless keyboard
- Check the battery charge or replace the batteries.
- Reconnect the keyboard or reset its receiver if the model provides that option.
- Check for visible damage or debris around the affected keys.
These connection and power checks are among Microsoft Support’s recommended keyboard troubleshooting steps. Avoid prying off keycaps as a general fix; removal can damage some keyboards.

If possible, connect the keyboard to another PC and test the same keys. Account for any driver the device requires. If the same keys fail on the other PC, the keyboard itself may need replacement. If they work there, continue troubleshooting the original PC.

For a laptop’s built-in keyboard, use the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model. Internal keyboard parts are not interchangeable across laptops just because they look similar.
6. Check for a keyboard driver update
- Search Windows for Check for updates and open the Windows Update settings page. Check for available updates.
- To check the device through Device Manager, search for and open Device Manager, find the keyboard device, open its properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Update Driver.
Microsoft documents both Windows Update and Device Manager as places to check for driver updates. An update may not be available, and updating a driver is not a guaranteed fix.

7. Decide when service or replacement is appropriate
Cracked or missing keys, visible damage, or keys that keep dropping or repeating after connection, debris, and settings checks can point to hardware failure. Microsoft’s service advice for damaged or persistently dropped or repeated keys applies specifically to Surface devices; for another brand, contact the PC or keyboard manufacturer and provide the precise model.
