Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your Android keyboard is missing, showing the wrong keyboard, or behaving unexpectedly, first check whether Gboard is disabled, another keyboard is selected, or its language and layout have changed. Try the least disruptive fix for the symptom: choose Gboard or enable it in Settings, then restart and update it before clearing its data.
First, identify what is wrong
Tap a text-entry field, such as a search box or message field. If a keyboard appears, the keyboard is not missing entirely: it may be the wrong active keyboard, or Gboard may have an incorrect language or layout. If no keyboard appears, check whether Gboard is enabled in Android’s on-screen keyboard settings.
The menu names below are Google’s general Android route. Labels and locations can vary by Android version and device maker. If you cannot find a setting, search Settings for “keyboard” and look for the on-screen keyboard or keyboard-management options.
Choose Gboard if another keyboard is active
When a different keyboard appears, use Android’s keyboard picker to switch back:

Troubleshoot a keyboard that crashes, freezes, or stops responding
Try the fixes in this order, moving to the more disruptive options only if the earlier one does not work.
Restart the device and update Gboard
- Restart your Android device.
- Open Google Play and check whether an update for Gboard is available; install it if so.
- Try typing again.
Clear Gboard’s cache
- Open Settings > Apps and select Gboard. On some devices, the app list or labels may be different.
- Open Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache, then test the keyboard again.
Clear Gboard’s data only if needed
If clearing the cache did not help, Android may offer Clear data or Clear storage on Gboard’s storage screen. Google says this resets Gboard to its default state. Because it resets the app, try the restart, update, and cache steps first.

Force stop or reinstall Gboard
If Gboard remains unresponsive, Google also recommends force-stopping it and reopening a text-entry field. If you decide to reinstall it from Google Play, make sure another keyboard is available first when Gboard is the only keyboard app on your device. Google’s warning is explicit: “If Gboard is your only keyboard app, install a secondary one.”
Roll back an update only if the problem started after one
If the issue began immediately after a Gboard update, Google says uninstalling Gboard updates may revert it to a more stable version. The option and its label can vary by device, and it may not be available. Treat this as a targeted rollback, not a routine first step.

Correct the language or layout
If Gboard opens but types in the wrong language or uses an unexpected layout, review its language settings rather than reinstalling it. Select the intended language and layout in Gboard’s language settings; Google’s instructions are in Set up Gboard. You can also switch languages from the keyboard as described in Google’s Gboard language instructions.
Changing a language in Gboard changes keyboard input settings; it does not change the Android device’s system language.
