PS5 cloud gaming is Sony’s Cloud Streaming feature, included with a PlayStation Plus Premium membership. It lets eligible players start selected games without downloading or installing them first. You can stream directly to a PS5; a PlayStation Portal is optional for handheld cloud play. Your account, region, game eligibility and internet connection determine whether it will work for you.
What is PS5 Cloud Streaming?
Sony’s Cloud Streaming runs a supported game over the internet rather than requiring you to download and install it on your console or handheld. Sony says this can save console storage that a game download would otherwise use. It is a way to play selected titles, not a service that makes every PS5 game available to stream.
The eligible selection includes games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, certain digital PS5 games in a subscriber’s library, and select free-to-play titles. The catalog can change and availability varies by region. Check a specific game in Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder before relying on streaming for it.
How do you stream a game on PS5?
- Make sure your PlayStation account has an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership and is eligible in your region.
- On your PS5, find a game that Sony marks as streamable. Eligible games offer a Stream option.
- Select Stream to start playing without downloading or installing the game first.
The exact game selection and interface can change. If a game does not show a Stream option, it may not be eligible for cloud play on your account or in your region.

Can you use PlayStation Portal for cloud gaming?
Yes. PlayStation Portal can stream supported games directly from the cloud for PlayStation Plus Premium members. Sony launched this Portal cloud-streaming feature on November 5, 2025. In this mode, the game runs from the cloud, so it does not depend on your PS5 being on or available for Remote Play.
That is different from using Portal as a Remote Play screen connected to your own PS5. Cloud Streaming to the PS5 console does not require Portal; Portal is only needed if you want to play on that handheld device.

Who can use PS5 Cloud Streaming?
Sony’s stated requirements include a PlayStation account, an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership, broadband internet and access from a supported country or region. Cloud Streaming is not available to child accounts. Streaming through Portal also requires a PlayStation Portal Remote Player.
Sony’s supported-region list includes Canada, the United States, Japan and numerous European countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Overseas territories are excluded. Since availability and account eligibility can change, check Sony’s current Cloud Streaming requirements and country list for the region associated with your account.

What internet speed do you need?
Sony publishes different speed guidance for PS5 Cloud Streaming and Portal. These are the thresholds Sony lists, not guarantees of smooth play: the actual experience depends on the game and the quality of your network.
| Device or guidance | Sony-published speed | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| PS5: establish a streaming session | At least 5 Mbps upload and download | Minimum listed on Sony’s PS5 Cloud Streaming overview. |
| PS5: 720p | 13 Mbps | Recommended speed listed on Sony’s PS5 Cloud Streaming overview. |
| PS5: 1080p | 23 Mbps | Recommended speed listed on Sony’s PS5 Cloud Streaming overview. |
| PS5: 1440p | 38 Mbps | Recommended speed listed on Sony’s PS5 Cloud Streaming overview. |
| PS5: 2160p | 52 Mbps | Recommended speed listed on Sony’s PS5 Cloud Streaming overview. |
| Portal: 720p | At least 7 Mbps | Minimum listed on Sony’s Portal support page. |
| Portal: 1080p | At least 13 Mbps | Minimum listed on Sony’s Portal support page. |
Because the PS5 and Portal figures come from separate Sony pages and use different labels, do not treat them as one universal threshold. Meeting a listed speed does not by itself ensure low latency or uninterrupted play.

What to check before choosing Cloud Streaming
- Game: Search Sony’s Game Finder; do not assume a title is streamable just because it is on PS5.
- Account and location: Confirm Premium membership, account eligibility and supported-region access.
- Device: Use a PS5 for console streaming; get Portal only if you want its handheld cloud-streaming option.
- Connection: Compare your broadband with Sony’s device-specific guidance, while allowing for variation in real-world performance.
- Cost: Premium is required, and subscription pricing varies by country and billing period. Check Sony’s local offer rather than relying on a price from another region.
