Before you start, confirm your iPhone model, country or region, carrier support, and—if the two plans are from different carriers—that your iPhone is unlocked.
Check that your iPhone and plans are compatible
Apple supports Dual SIM with eSIM on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and later, but SIM options vary by model and country or region. Supported iPhones can use a physical nano-SIM with an eSIM; iPhone 13 models and later also support two eSIMs. Some models have no physical SIM tray, so check the exact model and market before choosing a setup method. - Your carrier must support eSIM to activate an eSIM plan.
- Both plans must be active. If they use different carriers, the iPhone must be unlocked; if it is locked, both plans need to be from the same carrier.
- For a physical SIM, the iPhone must have a compatible SIM tray.
Add the second line
Activate an eSIM
Connect to Wi-Fi or cellular, then use the activation method supported by your carrier. This may be carrier activation, the carrier’s app, or Quick Transfer on supported phones. Follow the on-screen prompts; exact options and wording can vary by carrier, iOS version, and region.
For a travel eSIM, Apple describes this path: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > View Travel Options. Availability depends on the iPhone, destination, and provider. Check the plan’s destination coverage, data allowance, validity period, activation timing, hotspot support if needed, and roaming or renewal terms before purchasing. Insert a physical SIM
If your model supports a physical nano-SIM, eject the tray with a SIM eject tool or a paper clip. Place the SIM so its angled corner matches the tray, then reinsert the tray. Do not guess a SIM PIN: Apple warns that an incorrect guess can permanently lock the SIM. See Apple’s cellular-service setup steps.
Turn on both plans and choose how they’re used
- Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data in some regions).
- Check that both plans appear. Tap each plan and turn on Turn On This Line.
- Tap each plan’s label and give it a clear name, such as Personal or Business.
- Choose a Default Voice Line for calls to numbers you have not contacted before.
- Under Cellular Data, choose the line that should normally use mobile data.
- Decide whether to enable Allow Cellular Data Switching. When enabled, the iPhone may use either line for data depending on coverage and availability. Check your plan costs and roaming terms first.
Labels help distinguish the lines, but the default voice and data selections determine which plan is used in common situations. Apple’s Dual SIM guide describes these settings.

Understand calls, messages, and mobile data
With carrier support, both numbers can make and receive calls and messages. The iPhone can remember which line you used to contact someone, and you can select a line when starting a call or message. It uses one cellular data network at a time, as Apple states in its Dual SIM overview.
If you are on a call using one line, a call arriving on the other may go to voicemail. Whether it can come through depends on carrier Wi-Fi Calling support and the relevant data-switching conditions. Carrier terms may also add charges, including roaming fees.

Test the setup and troubleshoot a missing line
Confirm each line works
- Place a test call from each number and check that the intended line is selected.
- Send or receive a message using each number.
- Turn off Wi-Fi briefly and verify that cellular data uses the line you selected.
If the second line does not appear or activate
- Confirm that the exact iPhone model and country or region support the SIM type you are trying to use.
- Check with the carrier that the second plan has been provisioned and that the carrier supports eSIM or Dual SIM for your setup.
- Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data), select the plan, and check that Turn On This Line is enabled.
- If the plans use different carriers, verify that the iPhone is unlocked.
- If the issue remains, contact the carrier. Apple also recommends contacting the carrier for unresolved Dual SIM problems in its Dual SIM troubleshooting guide.
