ASUS announced the ROG Ally X on June 2, 2024 as an upgraded model in its ROG Ally handheld line. It keeps the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor while revising memory, storage, battery, chassis, cooling, ergonomics, and connectivity. The announcement is about the 2024 ROG Ally X—not the ROG Xbox Ally X announced with Xbox in 2025.
What is the ROG Ally X?
The ROG Ally X is ASUS’s 2024 Windows gaming handheld, identified in ASUS’s specifications as model RC72LA. ASUS described it as an update to the ROG Ally rather than a new processor generation: it retained the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme and changed other parts of the system.
ASUS Republic of Gamers announced the model on June 2, 2024, saying it “features the same AMD Ryzen™ Z1 Extreme processor, but adds upgraded storage, RAM, and battery life, alongside an updated chassis for improved ergonomics, cooling, and connectivity.” This is a manufacturer description, not a measured comparison of real-world performance or battery life. | Area | ROG Ally X (2024) | What ASUS establishes about the change |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme | Retained from the ROG Ally, according to ASUS’s announcement. |
| Memory | 24 GB LPDDR5X-7500 | ASUS lists upgraded RAM; the announcement gives this configuration. |
| Storage | 1 TB in the announced configuration | ASUS lists upgraded storage. Its specification page identifies support for an M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 4 drive. |
| Battery | 80 Wh | ASUS lists a larger battery and says battery life is upgraded; no attributable independent runtime result is established here. |
| Chassis, ergonomics and cooling | Updated chassis | ASUS says the revision improves ergonomics and cooling; no quantified cooling or comfort comparison is stated. |
| Connectivity | Two USB Type-C ports with different listed capabilities | The specification page lists one port supporting USB 4, DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery 3.0, plus a separate USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port. |
For the full model-specific details, consult ASUS’s ROG Ally X (2024) specifications. A larger battery capacity does not by itself establish how long the handheld lasts in a particular game or power mode, and the retained processor does not establish a specific performance difference. Those claims require comparable independent testing.
What do the ports and storage specifications mean?
USB-C connectivity
The RC72LA specification page distinguishes two USB Type-C ports. One supports USB 4, DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery 3.0; the other is listed as USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C. Because the ports have different stated capabilities, check the official specification page when choosing which one to use for a display, dock, or other connection.

SSD compatibility
ASUS lists M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 4 storage support. That identifies a drive form factor and interface, not a guarantee that every SSD will suit a particular upgrade. Before purchasing or installing a drive, verify its dimensions and capacity against ASUS’s current product guidance, and check installation instructions and any warranty implications.
Is the ROG Ally X the same as the ROG Xbox Ally X?
No. The ROG Ally X is the model ASUS announced in 2024. In June 2025, ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X in partnership with Xbox. The similar names refer to different product generations; the “Xbox” wording is an important distinction. See ASUS’s 2025 ROG Xbox Ally announcement.

What the announcement does—and does not—tell buyers
ASUS’s announcement and specifications establish the 2024 model’s identity, its stated hardware configuration, and its listed ports and storage support. They do not establish current retail availability or pricing, independent performance or battery-life results, or compatibility for a particular third-party case, screen protector, or dock. Those details should be checked against current, product-specific information rather than inferred from the model name or headline specifications.
