Samsung Cloud may delete data after more than 12 months without use, and Samsung says it gives advance notice—but data removed under that inactivity rule cannot be recovered. Missing photos may have a different explanation: Gallery photos and videos are not part of Samsung Cloud device backups, and Samsung’s Gallery sync with OneDrive ended September 30, 2026. First identify which service and data category the notice names; the recovery steps depend on where the files were stored.

Why Samsung Cloud may delete data—or make it look missing

Inactivity in Samsung Cloud

Samsung Support’s U.S. guidance says all data stored in Samsung Cloud will be deleted if it has not been used for more than 12 months. Samsung says it provides advance notice, and that data deleted for this reason cannot be recovered. The guidance does not specify which actions reset the inactivity period, so do not assume that simply opening a device or signing into an account is enough. Gallery sync with OneDrive ended

Samsung says Gallery Sync with OneDrive ended on September 30, 2026. Samsung also says photos and videos already synced remain in the linked OneDrive account, but new Gallery items no longer sync through that feature. So older photos may still be online even though recent photos are absent. The end of syncing does not, by itself, mean previously synced files were deleted. Samsung’s OneDrive and Gallery instructions

A Gallery item or cloud copy was deleted

Deleting an item in the phone’s Gallery can move it to the device’s Recycle bin. Deleting a OneDrive copy uses OneDrive’s separate cloud Recycle bin. These are different locations with different retention periods; emptying a bin or allowing its retention period to expire can make the item permanently unavailable there. Depending on the sync setup, deleting an item in one location may also affect a linked location.

The data was not in the backup—or you are checking the wrong account

Samsung says Gallery photos and videos cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud. A Samsung Cloud device backup instead covers selected categories, such as call and message history, device contacts and calendars, settings, apps, and voice recordings. Supported items depend on the device, operating system, carrier, and country. A missing file may also be associated with a different Samsung or Microsoft account than the one currently signed in. Which service held the missing data?

Samsung Cloud sync, Samsung Cloud device backup, Gallery-to-OneDrive sync, and the two Recycle bins are not interchangeable. Use the row that matches the kind of data and where it was stored.

Location or feature What it contains or does What to check
Samsung Cloud synced data Samsung says data not used for more than 12 months may be deleted after advance notice; data deleted under this rule cannot be recovered. Check the notice, the Samsung account, and other devices or local copies.
Samsung Cloud device backup Selected device data can be restored to a compatible Galaxy device; supported items vary by device, software, carrier, and country. On the phone, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Restore data.
Gallery media previously synced with OneDrive Existing synced files remain in OneDrive after Gallery sync ended September 30, 2026; new Gallery items no longer sync through this feature. Sign in to the Microsoft account linked to Gallery sync and look in OneDrive.
Gallery item deleted on the phone Samsung Canada says deleted Gallery items remain in the device Recycle bin for 30 days before automatic permanent deletion. Open Gallery > Menu > Recycle bin and restore the item.
OneDrive item deleted from the cloud Samsung says deleted photos and videos remain in OneDrive’s Recycle bin for 93 days. Open OneDrive > Recycle bin and restore the item.

The 30-day period is from Samsung Canada guidance, while the inactivity policy, OneDrive instructions, and 93-day period are from Samsung U.S. guidance. Menus, supported items, and availability can vary by region and device. Samsung Canada’s Recycle bin guidance

Check for missing data in a safe order

  1. Read the notice. Note whether it names Samsung Cloud, a category such as Gallery, or OneDrive. Record the date, any deadline, and the account it refers to. Samsung’s U.S. inactivity guidance says advance notice is provided.
  2. Check the Samsung Cloud account on the Galaxy. Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud. Review the available Sync and Back up data or Restore data sections, and confirm that the displayed Samsung account is the one associated with the missing data. Menu labels may differ by model and software version.
  3. Use the Samsung Cloud website if needed. Samsung says its portal can show synced data and device backup information, and two-step verification may be required. The portal does not let you download individual device backups as files; to restore a backup, use a compatible device’s Restore data workflow. Samsung Cloud access and restore guidance
  4. For Gallery photos, check the linked OneDrive account. Sign in with the Microsoft account previously connected to Gallery sync. Samsung says media already synced remains in OneDrive, where you can download wanted files through the app or website. Samsung’s instructions for photos previously synced with OneDrive
  5. Check both Recycle bins before deleting or emptying anything. Look in the phone’s Gallery Recycle bin for a local deletion and in OneDrive’s Recycle bin for a cloud deletion. Restore from the bin that contains the item while it is still within that location’s retention period.
  6. Save a separate copy of recovered files. Download important photos to another device or storage location, such as a computer or compatible external drive. An external drive is optional; compatibility depends on the phone and drive.
  7. If Samsung Cloud already deleted data for inactivity, look for duplicates elsewhere. Check other devices, apps, accounts, and local copies. Samsung says the data deleted under its inactivity rule cannot be recovered; contact Samsung Support for account-specific questions, but do not count on a cloud restore.

What Samsung Cloud can and cannot restore

Samsung Cloud device backups can be restored to a compatible Galaxy device through Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Restore data. They are not downloadable as individual files from the web portal. Backup coverage is selective: Samsung says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud, and supported content varies by device, operating system, carrier, and country. Gallery photos and videos are excluded from Samsung Cloud device backup, so look to OneDrive or another copy for those media rather than expecting a Samsung Cloud device restore to contain them. Regional and device differences

Samsung’s operational guidance cited here is primarily for the United States; the Gallery device-bin period is from Samsung Canada, and Samsung published a separate Australia notice in 2021 explaining that Gallery inactivity could be calculated separately from other Sync, Backup, and Drive data. That older, region-specific notice is not a basis for assuming the same account or storage rules apply everywhere. Samsung also describes a Google storage-linked Gallery option for Japan on One UI 9.0 in guidance updated October 5, 2026; that does not establish a universal replacement for Gallery-to-OneDrive sync. Before following a menu path or relying on a feature, check your country, Galaxy model, software version, Samsung account, and Microsoft account. Samsung warns that backup content and settings vary by model, operating system, carrier, and country.
