Amazon says it deployed its millionth robot in June 2025, expanding a fleet that then covered more than 300 facilities. The milestone counts many different machines—not a million identical robots—and does not mean every warehouse task is automated. The systems move inventory and carts, pick and sort items, organize storage, and help package orders, often as part of workflows that still involve employees.

What Amazon’s warehouse robots do

Amazon’s robots are specialized for different jobs. Some bring shelves or inventory to employees; others handle individual items, sort packages, or move carts. Larger systems combine robots, storage equipment, and staffed workstations.

System What it does Key detail
Sequoia Combines mobile robots, inventory containers, gantry equipment, robotic arms, and employee workstations to organize and present inventory. Amazon says it can identify and store inventory up to 75% faster. Its 2023 announcement said Sequoia could reduce fulfillment-center order-processing time by up to 25%. Both are company-reported claims, not independently established results. Amazon’s overview; Amazon’s 2023 announcement.
Hercules Finds and brings inventory pods to employees. Amazon says it can move up to 1,250 pounds of inventory. It uses cameras and centralized planning software for navigation and decisions. Amazon’s overview.
Titan Brings inventory to employees, with a focus on larger or bulkier items. Amazon describes it as related to Hercules, but the cited material does not establish a specific capacity figure. Amazon’s overview.
Vulcan Uses a robotic arm to pick items and stow them in inventory locations. It combines vision with touch and force awareness and can ask a human partner for help. Amazon says it can handle about three quarters of item types in its fulfillment centers, at speeds comparable to operations employees. Amazon’s overview.
Sparrow Uses a robotic arm to move individual items from containers into specific totes; Amazon has also described it as helping consolidate inventory. Amazon says it uses computer vision and AI to identify items. Amazon’s overview; Amazon’s 2023 announcement.
Robin Sorts packages from conveyor belts onto drive units and can divert damaged packages. In November 2024, Amazon told the Associated Press it was used in dozens of warehouses; that is a date-specific rollout snapshot, not a current facility count. Associated Press, November 2024.
Cardinal Selects a package, reads its label, and places it in a cart. Amazon says it can handle packages weighing up to 50 pounds. Amazon’s overview.
Proteus Moves carts autonomously, including in areas shared with employees. Amazon distinguishes Proteus from drive units restricted to robotics-only areas. Amazon’s overview.
Packaging automation Measures an order and forms a fitted protective paper bag. Amazon’s overview reports retrofits at more than 20 US fulfillment centers and more than 120 machines; those are company figures from that overview, not a live deployment count. Amazon’s overview.
Digit A bipedal robot from Agility Robotics, described as intended for testing to move and handle items. The cited announcement described a test plan in 2023; it does not establish current deployment. Amazon’s 2023 announcement; Associated Press, November 2024.

How the robots work with employees

Many of the systems are designed to bring work to a person rather than remove people from the process. Mobile units carry inventory pods or carts to staffed work areas, and integrated systems such as Sequoia present inventory at workstations. Amazon says this can reduce repetitive movement and heavy lifting. Other machines, such as Vulcan, handle some picking and stowing but can call on a human partner when needed.

The fleet is not uniformly deployed. Amazon’s June 2025 milestone announcement gives a network-wide count and facility footprint; it does not list which systems operate at each location. An Associated Press report from November 2024 described some named systems as still being tested or not yet widely rolled out. How many robots Amazon has—and what the count means

Amazon announced in June 2025 that it had deployed its millionth robot, to a fulfillment center in Japan. The company said its network then spanned more than 300 facilities. Its overview describes more than one million robots deployed across operations since 2012. These are Amazon-reported figures; the cited sources do not independently verify the aggregate or provide a current facility-by-facility inventory. Amazon’s 2025 milestone announcement; Amazon’s overview.

The number is best understood as a fleet milestone, not a measure of how many identical machines are working in one building. It includes different systems with different roles, and the public figures do not show how many of each model are active at a given site.

What Amazon’s performance figures establish

Amazon has published several performance and safety figures, but these should be read as company claims rather than independent comparisons. For example, Amazon says its DeepFleet software is intended to improve robot fleet travel time by 10%; that is a targeted improvement, not evidence in the cited source of a measured result across the network. Amazon’s 2025 milestone announcement.

In a 2023 announcement, Amazon reported that robotics sites had a 15% lower recordable incident rate and an 18% lower lost-time incident rate than non-robotics sites in 2022. That comparison does not establish that robotics caused the difference. Amazon’s 2023 announcement.

Do Amazon’s robots replace workers?

The available figures do not settle the net employment effect of Amazon’s robot fleet. The company describes training and technical roles associated with robotics; its 2025 announcement says more than 700,000 employees had been upskilled since 2019. That company-reported training number does not show how many jobs automation added, changed, or displaced. The Associated Press also discussed the possibility of retraining if automation makes roles obsolete, but did not quantify the fleet’s net effect on employment. Amazon’s 2025 milestone announcement; Associated Press, November 2024.
