Android 17 is a stable release. Google announced it on June 16, 2026, and said it was available on most supported Pixel devices. Google’s current list includes Pixel 6 and newer listed models, Pixel Tablet, and Pixel Fold. Other Android phones are expected to receive eligible updates during 2026, but availability depends on the exact model, manufacturer, carrier, and country. You do not need a new phone just to get Android 17 if your current device is eligible.
Is Android 17 out?
Yes. Google announced Android 17 as a stable release on June 16, 2026, and said it was available on most supported Pixel devices. Google’s Android Beta for Pixel page also lists Android 17 QPR2 Beta. That is a preview track for a quarterly update to Android 17, not evidence that the main Android 17 release is still unreleased.
Google’s consumer announcement says other eligible Android devices would follow during 2026. It does not provide a complete stable-release schedule for every non-Pixel model, carrier, and country, so check your device maker’s official update information for a firm answer.
What’s new in Android 17?
Google’s published feature descriptions emphasize multitasking, screen recording, foldable gaming, more limited app access, and additional security measures. Availability and implementation can differ by device and hardware.

Bubbles for floating apps
Long-press an app icon to open the app in a floating window. On large-screen devices, Google describes a bubble bar for switching between bubbles, resizing a window, or maximizing it. This is intended to make it easier to keep an app available while working in another one.
Screen Reactions
Android 17 adds a screen-recording toolbar and a flow for capturing your selfie-camera reaction alongside a recording of the device screen. It is designed for reaction clips without setting up a separate camera.
Foldable gaming controls
Google describes an optimized foldable layout with the game above and a dynamic gamepad below, plus native remapping for external controllers. Google said the foldable gaming mode would become available in the months after its June announcement; that timing does not establish that the feature is already present on every supported foldable.

More specific app permissions
Users can grant temporary access to precise location and choose specific contacts instead of sharing an entire address book. Google also describes a location-use indicator and a dialog showing recent app use of location.

Lost-device and threat protections
Google says Find Hub’s enhanced Mark as lost flow can lock a missing phone with biometrics. It also describes improvements to Live Threat Detection and Advanced Protection, and longer waits after PIN guesses to reduce repeated attempts.
Interface and memory controls
Other listed changes include a home-screen option to hide app names, expanded dark-theme controls, volume controls for individual assistants, and app memory limits intended to prevent apps from using excessive RAM.

What privacy and security changes does Android 17 add?
Google’s 2026 security overview describes several platform protections. These are Google’s published claims; the overview does not establish that every capability is active on every handset or available on every carrier network.
- AISeal with pKVM: Google describes hardware-backed, on-device isolation.
- Android OS verification: Initially launching on Pixel devices, this is intended to help users check whether a device is running an official, widely distributed Android build.
- One-time passcode protection: Android automatically hides one-time passcodes from most apps for three hours.
- 2G controls: Google says carriers can configure devices to default 2G off.
- Post-quantum cryptography: Google says Android 17 introduces post-quantum cryptography.

Other Android brands
Google names HONOR, iQOO, Lenovo, OnePlus, OPPO, realme, Sharp, vivo, and Xiaomi as partners offering Android 17 beta builds on some devices. A beta build for a partner device does not confirm that its stable release is available. For non-Pixel phones, look up the exact model on the manufacturer’s official update page; carrier and country can affect timing.

How do you install Android 17 on a Pixel?
For eligible Pixel devices, Google directs users to check for the update over the air. Back up your data before installing. A full reset is not required in most cases, but a backup gives you a recovery option if something goes wrong.
- Open Settings on your Pixel.
- Go to the Android version or system update area and check for an available update. The exact menu wording can vary by device and software build; follow Google’s current Android 17 installation instructions.
- If Android 17 is offered, follow the on-screen prompts to download and install it.
If no update appears, that does not by itself prove your phone is ineligible: availability can depend on rollout timing. Check Google’s eligibility list and the update status for your device before attempting a manual installation.

Most people who want a dependable daily-use phone should stay on the stable release. Google describes beta software as pre-release software that may contain errors or defects affecting normal device use. As of October 8, 2026, Google’s Beta for Pixel page lists Android 17 QPR2 Beta, which is a beta of a quarterly platform release.

If you still want to try a beta, read the current Android Beta for Pixel instructions and back up first. Google warns that opting out and returning to a stable public version can wipe locally stored data. The page describes a limited window after installing the stable version under test when opting out can avoid a wipe; check its current terms before enrolling or leaving.
Do you need a new phone for Android 17?
No—not if your current phone is eligible. Google’s Pixel list includes models back to Pixel 6, as well as the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold. For other brands, stable availability must be checked by exact model, manufacturer, carrier, and country. Consider a replacement only if your current device is unsupported or you already need a new one; Android 17 alone is not a reason to replace an eligible phone.
