iOS 17 added 24 ringtones and 12 text tones, according to Macworld’s September 18, 2023 report. Reflection remained the default ringtone, and Note remained the default text tone. You can find the sounds in Settings, then choose them for the whole iPhone or for individual contacts.

Reflection remained the default ringtone. MacRumors also reported that older ringtones were moved into a Classic section. How to choose a ringtone or text tone
Apple’s current instructions use this path; labels can vary by iPhone model and software version. Apple’s sound and vibration guide
- Open Settings and tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap Ringtone to choose a call sound, or tap Text Tone to choose a message sound. You can also select another alert category on this screen.
- Tap a sound to select it.
Set a sound for one contact
To give one person a distinct ringtone or text tone, open that person in Contacts, tap Edit, then choose Ringtone or Text Tone and select a sound. See Apple’s instructions for contact-specific sounds.

If a purchased tone does not appear as a text-tone option
Apple’s iOS 17.7.1 release notes say the update addressed an issue where custom and purchased ringtones might not appear as text-tone options. This was a display or selection issue involving custom and purchased sounds, not a change to the built-in iOS 17 list. Apple’s iOS 17.7.1 release notes

The built-in sounds do not require a purchase. Apple also documents buying ringtones and alert tones from the Tone Store and redownloading eligible purchases.
