Anna’s Archive’s primary annas-archive.org domain was reported under the registry status serverHold on January 5, 2026, meaning it was not activated in DNS. That status did not by itself prove that the site’s hosting, every other address, or all access routes were offline. Later court orders directed providers to disable access to specified domains, but an order is not proof that every provider complied at the same time. The latest independent status report available here, dated August 24, said the site was back online after downtime; its status and official address on October 8, 2026 remain unverified.
What happened to Anna’s Archive’s .org domain?
On January 5, 2026, Ars Technica reported that annas-archive.org, described as Anna’s Archive’s primary domain, had been placed under serverHold. Ars explained, citing ICANN, that this registry status means the domain is not activated in DNS. In practical terms, people may be unable to reach a site through that domain name; it is not the same thing as a confirmed shutdown of the site’s servers or every other service and address.
Ars also reported that the registrar said server-type status codes could only be set by the registry, which was unable to comment at the time. The report did not establish why the registry applied the status. A DNS status alone does not establish a court seizure, hosting shutdown, or country-specific ISP block.
Was the suspension caused by the Spotify backup?
Not on the evidence available from the January report. Anna’s Archive told Ars: “We don’t believe this has to do with our Spotify backup.” That is the operator’s view, not a verified explanation of the registry’s action. The contemporaneous reporting did not establish the cause.

What did the court orders require?
January 16: preliminary injunction in the music-company case
The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York entered a preliminary injunction on January 16, 2026, in the music-company case. The filed injunction directed specified domain registries, registrars, and service providers, upon notice, to disable access to listed domains and cease relevant hosting. Its factual findings were made for purposes of that order, based on plaintiffs’ submissions, and were expressly subject to further review before final judgment. The order does not establish that every named or affected provider acted immediately.
April: default judgment in the same case
A default judgment entered in April 2026 included broader permanent provisions, including directing providers to permanently disable access to listed domains upon notice. The filed judgment sets out the court’s language; it should not be read as independent confirmation of when, or whether, each provider implemented those directions.

May: separate publishers’ case
The Association of American Publishers described a separate case concerning 130 works and said the May 19, 2026 judgment assessed $150,000 per work. That figure comes from the AAP’s statement about the publishers’ case, not the January domain event or the music-company case. The latest independent status report available here is dated August 24, 2026. TorrentFreak reported that the site was online again after widespread downtime earlier that month. That report describes status as of its publication; it does not establish whether the service remains online on October 8, 2026, or identify a currently verified official address. How to interpret reports that the site is “down”
- Registry status:
serverHoldaffects DNS activation for the named domain; it does not alone show that hosting or every alternative address has stopped. - Court order: A direction to disable access upon notice establishes what the order requires, not the timing or completeness of provider action.
- Dated availability report: A report that the site was online in August is not a live check for October.
- Self-described status channel: Conflicting address claims require independent corroboration before they can be treated as official.
