The main change is improved finding: Apple says Precision Finding can guide you to a lost item from up to 50 percent farther away than the previous generation. The new model also has an upgraded Bluetooth chip, a louder speaker and Precision Finding support on certain Apple Watch models.
When did the new AirTag launch?
Apple announced the next-generation AirTag on January 26, 2026, and said it was available that day. That makes the September 2025 headline about a launch “a couple days away” a prelaunch prediction, not a current release update. Apple’s announcement gives the launch date and original pricing in its January 26, 2026 release.
What changed in AirTag (2nd generation)?
Precision Finding reaches farther, according to Apple
The new AirTag uses a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. Apple says Precision Finding can guide users to lost items from up to 50 percent farther away than the previous generation. That is Apple’s comparison, not a result from independent testing. The actual experience depends on the devices and conditions involved; Apple’s announcement does not provide a fixed distance in meters.
Bluetooth range and speaker are upgraded
Apple also identifies an upgraded Bluetooth chip and a louder speaker. These changes are intended to make items easier to find, but Apple’s announcement does not quantify the Bluetooth-range increase or the speaker-volume difference.

How does the new AirTag compare with the first generation?
| Feature | AirTag (2nd generation) | Previous generation |
|---|---|---|
| Precision Finding | Apple says it works from up to 50 percent farther away than the previous generation. | Comparison baseline in Apple’s announcement; no absolute range stated there. |
| Ultra Wideband | Second-generation chip, according to Apple. | Previous generation; Apple’s announcement does not give a chip-generation comparison detail. |
| Bluetooth and speaker | Upgraded Bluetooth chip and louder speaker, according to Apple. | Apple’s announcement does not quantify the differences. |
| Apple Watch Precision Finding | Supported on Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, according to Apple. | Not identified as supported in Apple’s launch announcement. |
What did AirTag cost at launch?
Apple listed the new AirTag at $29 for one or $99 for a four-pack at launch. Those are Apple’s U.S. launch prices announced January 26, 2026, not a promise of current prices from Apple or other retailers. Check local pricing before buying. At those launch prices, the four-pack averaged $24.75 per AirTag, compared with $29 for a single unit; the four-pack made sense only if you needed several trackers.

Apple also offered free personalized engraving through Apple.com and the Apple Store app at launch. The availability or terms of that offer may change.
Should you buy the new AirTag?
It is a more relevant upgrade if you often need Precision Finding, want to locate items using a supported Apple Watch, or value the stated speaker and Bluetooth improvements. If the older model already meets your needs, Apple’s launch announcement does not establish a reason to replace it based on a measured real-world range gain: the “up to 50 percent farther” figure is Apple’s claim, and no independent test result is cited here.

- Consider one AirTag if you have one frequently misplaced object to track and the current single-unit price suits your budget.
- Consider the four-pack if you have multiple objects in mind and the current total price is worthwhile; compare today’s per-unit cost rather than assuming the launch price still applies.
- Check your Apple devices if watch-based Precision Finding matters: Apple identifies Series 9 or later and Ultra 2 or later as supported.
- Check the holder if you plan to attach it to a key ring or other accessory. Apple showed the new AirTag with a FineWoven Key Ring, but that does not establish compatibility for every third-party accessory.
What about privacy and unwanted tracking?
Apple says AirTag is designed exclusively for tracking objects and offers protections against unwanted tracking. That describes the product’s intended use and safeguards; it is not a guarantee that misuse or tampering is impossible. Review Apple’s current product and support information for the protections and guidance that apply to your devices.
